PORT PURCELL, Tortola, VI- Word reaching our News Centre is that Natalie N. Penn-Lake has been tipped to be the new Chairperson of the Virgin Islands Festival and Fairs Committee (VIF&FC).

Her extensive duties, if appointed, will include spearheading the organisation of the annual Virgin Islands Emancipation Festival.

Penn-Lake is a longtime staff member of the BVI Tourist Board and Film Commission and currently holds the post of Standards and Training Manager.

The Virgin Islands Festival and Fairs Committee (VIF&FC) was merged with the BVI Tourist Board in early 2024. At the time of the merger, the chairman was Dirk L. Walters.

Efforts to get a comment from the Director of Tourism, Mr Clive L. McCoy, were unsuccessful up to the time of publication.

More details to follow.

      1. Don’t bring that criminal soca guy here again who connected to a gang (look it up …he gets tagged on their posts)

      2. Don’t engage in the lawless and lewd behaviour either. Right the wrong done for promoting Kartel knowing this imp sing a song name “Good like Jesus” with the lyrics talking about salacious sexual acts comparing it to Jesus and using a set of cuss words.

      3. Festival is a travesty. Nothing about it is respectful.

      4. Make a change and don’t go along with the masses.

I cannot understand why they don’t just leave the festival in the capital. Carrot Bay want one and East End want one. All other villages should have sub-events, each village, at a different time of the year. But a festival belongs in the capital. That nonsense always irks me.

That's a carnival in road town. Leave the other communities alone

Know the history. Festivals in Carrot bay and east end have been celebrated since emancipation. It's not about who wants one, it's about history....the access, transportation and the communities own way that they celebrated. My grand mother had to walk barefoot through the hills just to attend school in town. Of course they held their own celebrations, and should continue to do so.

You all like to pick and choose when you want to remember history. Especially when it suits you. My grandparents walked barefoot too, thank you. Some things in history we do not need to repeat. We evolve. Hold different events throughout the villages all year and leave the festival in town.

Love me some Nat! However has she ever been involved in festival even as a volunteer before? Does she even go to any of the nights or activities during festival? You don’t just put people to head huge portfolios like this with no knowledge at all of the subject. Festival is a giant beast it is not some small project that anybody who hasn’t been around festival before can handle. But good luck to her.

And by the way, anyone who says to get rid of East or Carrot Bay is either not from here or too young to understand or value our culture. Festival in BVI is not about money or partying. We celebrate our culture and history. East End is where our festival celebrations began! I would transform it into a fishing and boating focused event with the village on the beach along Bay like Anguilla Day. Carrot batches is our biggest contributor to our culture and the activities during the day are the best demonstrations OD’d our culture. The night time is neither here nor there for me.

But those 4 days in those 2 other villages are the most crucial aspect of our Festival and needs to be supported. They even raise their own money and don’t wait for government. Leave them alone! We are not Carnival and money grabbing like other places. The 3 components of our festival is what makes us special and stands out from every place else. We just need to promote it as such 3 Festivals 1 Celebration!

I’m all for fresh faces but how exactly was she chosen? What’s her background? It can’t be solely because she already works for the Tourist Board.

    What were the criteria?

I also agree with leave festival for town. That’s a town/capital thing. Thanks to history and we not trying to kill it. But it don’t have to be another festival here there and everywhere. The island too small for festival here there and everywhere. Every district should have their own unique celebrations, each month for each of them. Eg, East End maybe have their own unique thing in January, Carrot Bay have something unique in February, Sea Cows Bay March, and etc. I don’t see why they got to be pulling and hawling us all over the 24 square mile island for festival. Leave festival in town.

I honestly hate to be all over the place, Town, East End, Carrot Bay for festival. It’s really annoying. Leave everything central. The population and island is not big enough for it. It is not about forgetting history. History has not stopped. If it is in one location we can all celebrate. We have not stopped celebrating.
  • good idea (15/05/2025, 10:53) Like (4) Dislike (0) Reply
Just scrolling and saw where someone said each district should have something unique happening on different months of the year.

    January- East End
    February- Carrot Bay
    March- Sea Cows Bay
    Etc.
    Aug- Town Festival
    Etc
    Up until December another area.
That way, all year round will have something to look forward to in another district. Love that comment.

Natalie if you are seeing this, think about it
