A huge crowd gathered on the white sandy beach in Cane Garden Bay last evening, May 28, 2012, where local and international artists brought the curtains down with very unforgettable performances.
One of the top performers last evening was the VI’s Melanie Amaro, who in an interview stated that she is currently working on her first album to be released this summer.
The X Factor winner said her songs are the kind of songs that will make someone cry. She added that “it feels so good to be back in the BVI, I feel free and I can finally stop yanking.”
She told the media that winning the X Factor has changed her life but she is the same Melanie Amaro. "I'm still adjusting to the fans screaming my name but I'm having fun, Thanks to the fans of Tortola and without the BVI, I wouldn’t be where I am today without you.”
Even though Melanie's performance was so short, the crowd especially, Virgin Islanders, were glad to see her again.
She performed the same song she performed on her first audition on X Factor, ‘Listen’ By Beyonce as well as ‘I Believe’ a track from Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.
In sharing her stardom experiences with her fans, she said that it’s a joy and there is so much in store for them.
The night also featured up and coming singer\songwriter Ouida with saxophonist Kamau Georges hyping the crowd with hits from Rihanna and other mega superstars.
Promoting love and peace through her songs, the talented Virgin Islander was a hit, especially for the couples.
Looking like a superstar, dressed like a superstar, the crowd gave her nothing but that superstar treatment, giving her response to every line of every song, hands up, swaying from side to side.
Georges described Ouida as the 'Caribbean Celine Dion' and the crowd happily agreed.
Ouida encouraged the crowd to cherish life and share love while her dancers gracefully pranced the stage, one would feel as if it was a peace concert. The only thing that was missing was the lighters swaying from left to right, but the empty hands did just fine.
"What about life, what about love, what about you what about me, if we don't care what kind of world this would be" - It was evident that the crowd definitely pondered on these words. Ouida and Georges delivered a very soothing performance, with a voice of a goddess, the vibes floating off her into the crowd was definitely a comforting but aggressive one.
In a rendition tribute to her idol Whitney Houston, performing 'I will always love you', simply 'awesomeness', hitting the right octaves that received applause during and long after she left the stage.
With the stage vacant, Forever Motown rushed on, making sure the crowd didn't lose the excitement they worked up during the previous performances.
Hitting the stage in unforgettable outfits, the group received the crowd’s attention, no questions asked.
The unisex group carried the crowd back to a place and time where music and its lyrics really meant something. Back to a time where music broke the barrier of racism and blacks and whites held hands dancing to the beats that Motown-signed artists produced.
The women left the stage, leaving the men to serenade the women in the crowd, re-assuring them that they are beautiful and love still exists.
Patrons received renditions from Gladys Knight, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder and Frank Sanatra. Or so they thought.
Singing songs from artists signed with the Motown label back in the day, the females of the group kept it very exciting by changing into different costumes depicting the stars. Resurrecting the dance moves from the golden days, Forever Motown was a very lively act, touching every spot of the stage.
The crowd obeyed their every command clapping, stepping and shouting. Screams high as ever, the women in the crowd agreeing to being "three times a lady" when the youngest member of the group sang his heart out.
"Ain’t no mountain high enough to keep me from getting to you" they sang as they departed the stage and made way for the next act.
London born Grammy Award winner, R&B singer-songwriter, rapper and record producer Estelle closed the night and the three three days of music with no disappointments.
In an interview with Estelle, she said that this is her first time on the island and she is loving it to the max.
The crowd grew while awaiting Estelle, dancing to the tunes of local DJ Commodore, while the stage being prepared for her presence that was evidently longed for by her fans.
Threatening the crowd, Estelle dared them to 'rock out' with her, or she'll call them to dance on stage. Beats bouncing in chest, ears ringing with sweet music, hands up and every body's feet swaying left to right, they were in a trance.
Estelle confided in the crowd details of a bad relationship, she let the crowd be her psychiatrists, as she “oooed” and “aaahhhed” and gave those lalala’s, she showcased raw talent, a talent that the fans loved.
Singing her hits, 'American Boy', 'Wonder Why' and Bob Marley's ‘Is this love’, Estelle proved herself to be a great entertainer. From Estelle down to her back- ups, throughout the whole performance, kept it at a high tempo.
This was a case where best was definitely saved for last.
The London singer showcased her versatility while dropping tracks with a Pop, Reggae and R&B background. The crowd was in love.
She took the fans on a tour with songs coming from the United Kingdom over to the United States, down to Jamaica then all the way back up to the motherland Africa.
She encouraged her fans through her songs to love themselves and love their life, love their spouses and do everything to make each day worth it. Leaving the stage singing it was a good time, the crowd screamed for an encore.
Travelling with Estelle was Tika Sumpter, world renowned Model and Actress in some of television's most loved Series such as Gossip Girl and The Game.
The night also featured acts from local performers, Reema, Razor Blades Fungi Band and It’s a Secret out of Virgin Gorda.
The local acts were a hit to the crowd. Singing very familiar tunes that the crowd loved, one would feel that it was open house at the Karaoke Bar, as everyone was singing along.
Organisers of the event thanked everyone for coming out and supporting the fest and making it successful, while the DJ officially closed things down.
