ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Although no announcement was made about a record label for Monea Richardson and Aaron Da Jedi, it does not mean their performance did not impress nor caught the attention of the record label executives that attended the 5th Annual Top 7@7 Music Awards on Saturday March 3, 2012.

Virgin Islands News Online spoke to Bryan Cox of So So Def Recordings, who said the performance of Monea Richardson and Aaron Da Jedi particularly caught his attention and although he did not want to make a commitment then said he would certainly be considering working with either one of them.

So So Def Recordings is a record label based in Atlanta, Georgia, and owned by producer Jermaine Dupri, specializing in Southern Hip Hop, R&B and bass music. It has worked with Sonic Music and Columbia Records and notable acts include the female R&B group Xscape, Jagged Edge and Bow Wow.

The Top 7@7 Music Awards was again about Monea Richardson as she collected awards for Best Love Song, Number One Song, Best Female Artiste and the 2012/2013 Champion Artiste. The latter award was shared by Travie Rozae, who picked up two Number One Songs Awards.

Richardson was no doubt a crowd favourite and certainly stepped up her game compared to last year as her choreography and stage presence was impressive.

But the person going out with the biggest of spoils was Travis Walters aka Travie Rozae, who landed a record deal with UpFront Records.

Impressed by Walter’s captivating performance was owner and founder of UpFront Records, Devyne Stephens, who said the future of music in the Virgin Islands is full of talent and is well supported before making the big announcement that he was welcoming Travie Rozae into the UpFront Records family.

Stephens has worked with artistes such as Toni Braxton, Pink, TLC, Usher and Boyz II Men and is also credited for discovering Senegalese R&B singer Akon.

The announcement of Travie Rozae’s record deal was followed by loud applause and a speechless Travie, struggling to hold back tears, said he was grateful to God and his many supporters for the opportunity.

Walters later revealed to Virgin Islands News Online that his stint in Atlanta with R.A.Y.D.A.R. Entertainment’s Superstar Moulding Programme was about preparing him for that particular night and all the hard work, dedication and team work paid off in the end.

“I used to sleep at the studio, honestly, just like making sure the song was right, making sure that everything was right. The choreography was the hardest part as well. We would be there for like hours from like 11 a.m. to 11p.m., no break just dancing. It was real hard,” an overwhelmed Walters said.

Among those that were there to share the moment with Walters were Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron Walwyn, Former Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Andrew Fahie, President of Follow The Movement Craig Lake, Planet VI, Raymond Daniels of R.A.Y.D.A.R. Entertainment and Bevis Sylvester of Delta Petroleum.

Sylvester said his interest is in the youth. “It’s about corporate BVI coming alive and supporting your youths. I believe that if we do not support the youth, who would be Delta Petroleum customers three or four years from now, they are the same ones that are going to be involved in crime. Delta Petroleum aims to ensure that they get hold of the youths and show them the way so that they could find their talent and perform in the greatest way. We never knew that Travis would have been given a record label and it makes me proud and I hope that this year they are going to sign Monea also to go forward and make the BVI crowd.”

This is great news! From all the acts those would have been my two pics as well. Aaron raps, and he raps from the heart, and he has his own style that's what set him apart from some of the other performers. Monea on the other hand is a Quadripule threat-She is intelligent-Choreographer, Dancer, Rapper & Singer. Hope something comes out of this recognition.

actually i thought the same thing and i am neither old, tired, boring nor hating, i am a young lawyer just returned home from school. I agree that she may want to see herself projected on the same level as the international stars, i would really hate to see another rihanna situation, and if she put it out there from now that she down to wear next to nothing....just saying....another (hopefully, cause i dont know her) decent young lady who could have made it by her talent alone bites the dust and ends up being another statistic of the phrase 'sex sells'
