ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Enid Scatliffe Pre-Primary School (ESPPS) on Friday March 11, 2016 hosted a day of reading appreciation when the Mobile Library visited the school at the invitation of the Principal with a view to stirring interest in reading and books in the students.

Speaking with this news site today March 16, 2016, Principal of the Enid Scatliffe Pre-Primary School Valerie P. Charles-Welch said she as Principal and staff have embarked on an early intervention approach to encouraging reading at the school, which hosts 226 students ages four to six.

“Since September of 2015 the ESPPS has launched a campaign to promote reading. Since then we have had the following activities: personalised books to students, a reading tea party, our school adopters (the Social Security Board) have read for us during 'Reading  is Fun Week', we have celebrated the life of a cancer student during 'Cancer Awareness Week', 'We have had a 'Book Parade' and a field trip to the library.”

Charles-Welch said that upon her request, the Chief Librarian Suzanne S. Greenaway consented to the Book Mobile visiting the Enid Scatliffe Pre Primary School to share information concerning its services to the students.

According to the Principal, students were taught the importance of reading, how to take care of books and given a chance to explore the Book Mobile where they met the Dr Seuss' mascot.

“Parents must recognise their power in promoting the success of their children,” said Mrs Charles-Welch. “We need parents to realise that despite their level of academic achievement, they are their child's first teacher. Therefore, they need to administer home support in many ways,” said the Principal in a comment to this news site.

She said that apart from helping with daily homework activities, parents are therefore asked to take their children to the library and sign up for membership. She said that at this level, utilising the library is a perfect intervention method to grooming a good reader.

“I will like to commend those parents who have been playing an active role in helping their children to read. Likewise, I will like to extend appreciation to the teachers who have gone the extra mile to preparing students to read. An excellent class activity is a school's bulletin board which students of the school are presented with a variety of reading atmospheres. We are grateful that we have seen students and parents motivated as a result of our efforts,” said Mrs Charles-Welch.

    A Great Idea, ESPPS!

Lord, please continue to bless the principal, teachers, parents and students of my Alma Mater as they forge towards promoting success in these young minds.
Please let success reign in their very being. As our country's future is in your hands. We thank you for the favour that you have on these young lives in Jesus' Name.

To be truthful, I really like what has been happening at this school lately.

Administrator Charles-Welsh, God Bless You! Let God lead you daily!

Staff, continue to be the sparks that gets the fire of success going.
Parents, get on board. Do your part.
Students, I decree and declare success upon you, in Jesus' name
