Miss World BVI & hopefuls rep for cancer
During her reign, both as Miss BVI 2013-2014 and Miss World BVI 2014-2015 Ms Chichester stood out as an advocate for cancer and has been an active member of the BVI Cancer Society.
The four young women, who will be in strong competition with each other to wear Ms Chichester’s crown, also know they will have big shoes to fill as Miss World BVI.
As a start, the contestants have joined forces to learn more and show support for the BVI Cancer Society. Just last Saturday September 19, 2015 they were all decked out in pink as they went bowling at the Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duff’s Bottom.
The four contestants are Sasha Wintz, Bryana Nycol Robles-Dixon, Yadali Thomas-Santos and Mindy Paul.
‘Cancer is everybody’s business’
Present by invitation to interact with the reigning queen and the four contestants was President of the BVI Cancer Society, Ms Gloria A. Fahie. Before the young ladies got into their bowling fun moment, Ms Fahie took time out to speak with them about activities set for the month of October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“It was very heartwarming to receive a call to interact with the young women to ‘pow wow’ with them in such a social setting. Cancer is everybody’s business, man, woman, boys and girls and every opportunity I have to share with anyone about cancer I grab at it. I was very tired that evening but I went out to meet them and didn’t regret any moment of it,” Ms Fahie related to this news site.
“One of the key messages I had for those girls is that cancer can affect anyone at any time and, despite they are young, they still need to make sure they keep their bodies in check. There are some simple things that young people can do to ensure they keep their health in check especially as it relates to cancer,” said Ms Fahie.
She also noted that the Miss World BVI hopefuls were told of the theme for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the Virgin Islands, which is ‘Banding together for cancer’.
“It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month but with the extent of cancer here we cannot spare any moment to advocate for all cancers,” explained Ms Fahie.
Meanwhile, the Miss World BVI pageant is set for October 3, 2015 at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium, H. Lavity Stoutt Community College in Paraquita Bay and, according to franchise holder Mr Damion C. Grange, no stone is being left unturned to ensure that the patrons and sponsors get a pageant that is of a great standard.
“I must at this juncture express our gratitude to our sponsors that have so far come on board with us: CIL (Caribbean Insurers Ltd), Ms Simone Monsanto and her team there are just great; LIME, we cannot over emphasise what your partnership means for this pageant. Your input to help groom ambassadors for the BVI is so highly appreciated,” said Mr Grange as he encouraged potential sponsors to take advantage of the opportunity to get on board.
