ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Miss BVI 2012, Sharie B.Y. deCastro stated that she counted the opportunity to represent the Virgin Islands at the recently held Miss Carival Pageant in St. Vincent & the Grenadines as an amazing experience and added that she was certain that she did her best to represent the country.

“While I did not walk away with the crown,” Sharie said, “I am extremely proud of my effort and subsequent performance.”

Ms de Castro spoke for her fellow contestants in stating that “the kind people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines made the overall experience a pleasant and memorable one.”

She expressed gratitude for the many words of encouragement and support from the audience, contestants, chaperones, committee members, and backstage personnel; citing them as inspirational and delightful.

With her reign drawing to a close as Miss BVI, Virgin Islands News Online asked the queen about her most memorable experience of being Miss BVI.

Sharie recalled that it was a remarkable opportunity to represent the Virgin Islands at the world's largest travel trade show, ITB in Berlin. “ It was certainly an experience I will never forget,” she said. “At this conference I was able to tell others about the pristine beauty of our unspoiled territory in an effort to entice them to visit our lovely shores. So I would definitely say that so far that has been my most memorable experience.”

With reference to the Miss Carival Pageant, she said she believed that this too was a great experience and embraced it as another medium by which she was able to represent the Virgin Islands regionally and show its Caribbean neighbours what the BVI has to offer. She also noted the many relationships established with other wonderful young women who participated in the pageant.

The most challenging part of it all, Sharie disclosed, was the hectic schedule which had contestants going like “clockwork”. She added, “It required meticulous time management but I was able to draw from my teacher training in order to meet the demands of photo shoots, appearances, historical tours, rehearsals and so on.”

In recounting what would be deemed as her lasting legacy, Sharie related that as part of her personal mission, she endeavoured to continue in the tradition as established by former Miss BVIs in ensuring that this ambassadorial position is held in high regard.

“It is therefore my hope that I have been able to live up to that expectation,” she said, “I also hope that in some way I would have portrayed a positive and impressionable image of the Virgin Islands through every opportunity given as I vowed to do my part to make a difference.”

When asked if she felt her reign as Miss BVI was what she expected, Sharie responded by saying, “I believe expectation is the spice of life. It is what keeps us going. However, the reality is usually a wake up call. My reign has not been without its share of challenges but I can unequivocally state that it has been an amazing journey and at the risk of sounding redundant, to have had the privilege of representing my country in this capacity is priceless.”

Sharie said she was determined not to burden herself with the unfortunate situations when asked if she would have done anything differently. Instead, she said, she would rather focus on the once in a lifetime opportunity that was afforded to her and the wealth of knowledge and experience gained.

“As most of us know,” she added, “hindsight is 20/20, and fuels the temptation for regret. Also because of my spiritual foundation, I have learned how to convert each test into a testimony.”

She expressed sincere gratitude to the Festival and Fairs Committee, the Ministry of Education & Culture, Elmore Stoutt High School, sponsors, chaperons, family, friends and supporters for their unwavering support. “It is with your support that I continue to represent my people as a true ambassador. I am humbled by the overwhelming outpour of love and reassurance from my community and look forward to completing my reign with true BVI Pride.”

She also offered heartfelt congratulations to fellow contestants of the Miss Carival pageant on a job well done. She also wished Miss Dominica, Leslassa Armour Shillingford, all the best during her reign as Miss Carival 2013.

For those who were listening via a SVG radio station...even the announcers had Miss BVI to place as they commented that it was between Miss BVI and Miss St. Kitts/Nevis. Sad!! But we know our Miss BVI represented us well because even the people who where there agreed
