ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Information reaching our news centre is that prominent member of the Hon Myron V. Walwyn led National Democratic Party (NDP 1) Mark H. Vanterpool (R4) has resigned from active politics in the Virgin Islands (V) effective today, Tuesday, March 5, 2019.

Personal Reasons

In a release sent out to the media today, Mr Vanterpool cited personal reasons as the motive for the resignation and apologised to the people of district 4 for the sudden move.

“Today I have advised the Clerk of the House of Assembly that I wish to be excused from sitting in the next House of Assembly due to be convened on 12th March 2019. I am aware that this would be very surprising to the residents of District 4 and the territory, having been duly elected in the February 25, 2019, General Elections,” he said in the opening of his statement.

“However, allow me to say that this is a decision I have made for personal reasons... I sincerely regret the disappointment and inconvenience that this will cause. I wish to thank all the constituents of District 4 and the citizens of the Territory for allowing me to serve you for four (4) terms in the House of Assembly,” Hon Vanterpool said.

Honour & Privilege

According to the District 4 representative, “I consider it an honour and privilege to have been given the opportunity to serve this great country. It was my pleasure to give back to this country which has given so much to my family and I over most of my life, from a toddler until today, having migrated with my mother and most of my siblings from the island of Anguilla.”

In wishing Premier Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) and his team well, he said any government “can feel free to call on me for any advice that I can share from the experience that I have gained.”

Mr Vanterpool's resignation comes just one week after his NDP party faced a massive defeat from the Virgin Islands Party in the 2019 polls.

Has has served in VI politics for over 20 years, including as Minister where he oversaw the construction of the now Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park (TPP), a project that was allegedly corrupt with a high cost overrun and is expected to be the subject of an audit under the new Hon Fahie led VIP Government.

No surprise here! The 8 years of sticky-fingered-ness will inevitably be revealed. politicians cannot autonomously act as though the treasury (tax payers money) is their personal pocket books. There is much to be uncovered, discovered, unearthed, dug up... you name it. I hope you have a lot of depends on the shelf jefe. You'll need them when the indictments start coming in

No pension, this is an insult to the people of the Virginislands. Is this what the observers want, for the citizens from the other OT,s to slap us in our faces? Are we going to have a by-election? If so his pension must go towards that. He did not allow a month. Is that the thanks to this territory?

I would have done the same. You people have no respect , no gratitude, thank God I’m not from bvi. The way you class these people. Please remember VIP was in there before and it was a reason why you all took them out and trust me they are going to make the same mistake. Oh no I forget there are only indigenous people in now and they will and can never do any wrong. Set of vampires. Tell me to leave your country now and by the way I’m use to that by now

You sound very bitter and I wonder why. People with your mentality bring about too much negative considerations. Lighten up, as you indicate that you are not from the BVI. Save your sarcasm for your home country, but perhaps you are not welcomed there. Try to take it easy. The VIP will do just fine - they are BVIslanders who are taking their rightful place in the politics of their homeland.

This comment right here is the reason why we have a divide. So a person that pays taxes can’t even discuss the politics of the country they contribute to? Why are you so wicked, heartless and unwelcoming? We discuss the politics of the USA and the UK all the time, but when it comes to the BVI an expatriate can’t have an opinion. Stop it you prideful, unfair and unloving person. Stop your separatist language.

That VIP aint the same VIP at all. You talking bout the VIP that included Fraser, Dr. Scatliffe, Juggie, Omar Hodge, Dancia, Irene, Flax , Ralph and Vernon Malone. They got replaced due to Biwater, streetlights, by roundabout and it didnt look like much progress was being made. The only member that is the same is Fahie so you need to join BVIAirways and disappear.

That is why God need to intervene for fairness to reign in the BVI. They don’t even want you to have a political opinion in the country where we toil. But my God don’t sleep he watches the affairs of men. Lord send help!!! all naturalized overseas citizens should have a say in the direction of this country. Your word says that we reap what we sow! Lord you know we have toiled here among them yet some are so unjust that not even an opinion we can have. Lord help us correct this unfairness and wickedness. Fix it Jesus!

I am a BVIslander and I love you! I say that without sarcasm. I am however insulted by your 'set of vampires' comment though. Can we stop this division? Are all BVIslanders alike? If so, why would you stay? Stop generalizing us. Do you realize that most bloggers on here are probably not constituents in the 4th district? Do you also realize the some bloggers could be expats as well? C'mon! Let's agree to not be so irresponsible with our words because it BVIlsanders were truly horrible you would not still be here.

On another note, Mr. Vanterpool is not perfect but he HAS done good by the people of the 4th district or we would not vote him in time and time again. Thank you for this service Mark and we will decipher who may or may not hold a candle to his caring countenance in the Bi-election.

People of the 4th who voted for this man, look beyond what you see. You have been used (again) in an attempt to continue the legacy of the recently retired LS. Next , the son/nephew will contest the seat. Let's see if you will again allow yourselves to be used or whether you will send a strong and powerful message.

The former long-term D-4 Rep and MCW Mark Vanterpool has indicated that he is resigning for personal reason as D-4 rep just a few days (8) after the recent general election on 25 February. If this is truly the case, his decision, though surprising and shocking, should be respected. If Mark’s reason(s) for resigning would have prevented him from effectively representing the people in D-4, he did the right thing, putting the needs of the district before his self interest.

Yes, the residents of D-4 may be disappointed and feel exercised for nought, having just cast their vote for him a week ago. However, the grey lining in, perhaps, the dark cloud is that in a few weeks D-4 residents will get the opportunity to cast their votes for another rep who hopefully will serve the full term.

He should have known that a week ago and a day and save the taxpayers money! Unless he has a legitimate reason (such as finding out he’s ill) that came about in the last seven days, he’s selfish and irresponsible!

Well let's see what stone gonna do now. I was ready to move forward but now we need to investigate Mark to the fullest. Turn the hound dog investigators loose and unearth every penny he siphon off. Boycott he and he son's stores. Since his son was on the pulpit screaming and yelling too. This is an insult to every person who ever invested time and resources and love to contest our elections. An affront to every member that ever Sat in the HOA or LegCo. He should be stripped of every honor including his pension. What an embarrassment to our democratic process. If he had won, he wouldn't have stepped down so it was all a show for power and greed. Now this becomes a distraction and another expense on the BVI. Well he could go back DR and go siddung now!

This is a mirage; it is not what it appears to be. The move is surprising, shocking and unprecedented. I don’t for a microsecond believe he is resigning just for personal reasons 8 days after the 25 February election. Rumors are rumors. But here are a few that are being fling about: 1. Mark and others were advised not to compete in the election, 2. Mark decide to run to save the seat for the NDP because other family member was not a sure thing. Just a few of rumors being floated. There are other rumors that Myron, Henry..........etc may cast their hat in the ring. In the end, D-4 residents will have to decide. The election should have reset the clock but there seem to be some unfinished business to take care of. The territory didn’t need this distraction now or later but it has to deal with it now rather than later. This is a teachable moment for other politicians and public servants. Ok. Let’s set the bye election date and let’s get ah dun.

Let’s lead like eagles, not careen off the cliff like buffaloes.
