ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – VIslanders Darier Malone, Jelissa Potter and their Lady Royals softball team returned to Daly Field on Thursday, April 17, 2014 for a Sun Conference double header against Ave Maria University.

After splitting with Southeastern University on Wednesday in Lakeland, Fla., the Lady Royals lost both games on Thursday which dropped their conference record to 6-6 and overall record to 14-18.

In game one, the Lady Royals only managed five hits off Ave Maria's starter Beth Vaccarezza.

Vaccarezza pitched a complete game shut-out as the Lady Gyrenes blanked the Lady Royals 3-0. Darier Malone had the only multi hit performance for the Lady Royals going 2-for-4 in game one. Jelissa Potter, Chelsie Valentine, and Tiffany Porter recorded the other three hits for Warner.

Hayley Padgett (1-6) went the distance in the circle in game one. Padgett allowed three runs, one earned, off seven hits.

The Lady Royals struck first in game two in the bottom of the second inning. Tiffany Porter crossed home plate during a pick-off at first base for the 1-0 lead. After Ave Maria tied the game a 1-1 in the top of the fourth, the Lady Royals answered back with two runs of their own to regain the lead.

With the bases load, Malone drew an RBI walk for the go ahead run. Stefani Bonilla followed with a sacrifice fly for the insurance.

The teams would tie things up two more times during the final three innings and would need extras to find a winner. Heading into the 10th and the game tied 4-4, Ave Maria rallied to score four runs. In the bottom of the same inning, Chelsie Valentine plated Yalieen Milian on a single through the left side to cut the Lady Gyrene lead to 8-5. That would be the only run the Lady Royals put together in the final inning.

In a mid-week Sun Conference road doubleheader, Warner University softball team split a pair of games with cross-county rivals Southeastern University. The Lady Royals came from behind in game one winning 4-3 then lost game two in nine innings 2-1.

The split moves the Lady Royals' record to 6-4 in conference play (14-16 overall) and into a tie for third place in the league standings with Thomas University. The Fire are alone in fifth place with a 6-6 conference record and are 28-15 overall.
