VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI – Speaker of the House of Assembly Honourable Ingrid Moses-Scatliffe has called for the “breaking down of walls” that exist between the [British] Virgin Islands (VI) and the United States Virgin Islands (USVI).

"It is my hope that with our renewed efforts for true partnership, future progress and diplomacy, some of the walls that still remain will soon come down," said Ms Moses-Scatliffe in her very brief remarks at the Luncheon Ceremony in observance of the 40th Annual VI/USVI Friendship Day at the Rosewood Little Dix Resort on Saturday July 29, 2013.

"I believe that as we continue to build new bridges between our Territories, on this side of Pillsbury Sound, I am eager to see a new Agriculture exchange bridge return, where as we can, as in times past, share with our family and friends in the USVI our agricultural products that were once common between us," she continued.

Governor of the United States Virgin Islands (USVI), the Honourable John P. de Jongh Jr. had also indicated that there are areas of “the friendship” that need to be worked on but also said the binding factors of the friendship are much stronger.

He said the passion and the friendship between USVI and VI are very strong." We each understand the politics that binds our communities, but I think today and if you go back to various events that we have you'll see that the culture that exists between us is really strong," the Governor said.

"All you have to do is look at where the pension checks go to realise the relationship that we have each and every day between us. If you want to understand the closeness you just have to talk to our tourism commissioners and you'll understand that they work very closely together.” Governor de Jongh also highlighted the close working relationships between the conservation and fisheries and disaster management departments of both territories.

"In so many places around the world there are conflicts between people solely because the geography that separates them. We are separated by a small shiver of water and that shiver of water does nothing to separate the bond and friendship, the family that we have with each other and that is what keeps us strong each and every day," Governor de Jongh stated.

The Friendship Luncheon featured the usual exchanging of gifts among the politically bonded partners and personal, professional, and casual acquaintances.

We would surely like to be able to bring mangoes back to this side of the Virgin Islands. Also cooked meats such as pork and goat, Cane Rum and plenty of vegetables.

If the Premier could work on those issues along with DeJongh, that would be great for many of the Virgin Islanders(British) living on this side of the Virgin Islands(US)!
