ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Saying that it may sound harsh but he has to deal with it in the House of Assembly as he has “girl children” too, Opposition Member Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) has warned against some public officials engaging in sexual harassment of females and even males in the work place.

Hon Fahie made the disturbing revelations during the continuation of the Seventh Sitting of the First Session of the Third House of Assembly at parliament chambers in Road Town, Tortola on March 24, 2016. The former Minister for Education Hon Fahie also said he has received reports about some senior public officials using profanities towards public servants, including females.

“But I am sounding a warning. I am asking first that those in senior positions keep your hands to yourself and leave the public servants who are females, let them come and do their job, whether they single or whether they married, leave them so they could produce for this country.”

According to Hon Fahie, some of these transgressions are known by certain government officials but they choose to sweep them under the rug. “Since the powers that be want to always sweep under the rug when it comes to these things... leave the people girl children.”

Obviously emotional about the matter, Hon Fahie said issues of sexual harassment are affecting the productivity of the civil service since persons are not willing to have to deal with certain persons who are in the habit of making advances. “And they telling me they can’t make it to the front of the public service because they quote unquote ‘aint giving up their front’ so they can’t make it to the front. It sounds harsh but I have girl children and since I got to come to this House to deal with certain things that are being covered up by certain entities …I can’t say all the Government know.”

At this time Opposition Leader Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3) asked: “What about the men too?”

“I didn’t want to say that part because it have some men have started to come to me to the office to make the same complaints, but I going to leave out that part because I told them go to the weight room and get strong and defend yourselves,” Hon Fahie replied.

Some senior officials using “cuss words” to public servants

Another report Hon Fahie was peeved about was concerning the unprofessional conduct of some senior public officials.

“Another set of persons told me that in the Public Service there are persons in senior positions that are using profanities in the public setting like it is nobody’s business. Speaking to them like they are trash, and they are females. And I take that very seriously.”

According to him, public servants are discouraged from taking their complaints against wrongdoings to higher levels of management since they know some of the offenders are closely knitted to the National Democratic Party (NDP) Government and they know that nothing will come out of their complaints.

Hon Fahie further said he was even privy to a complaint being made by someone in the public service to “the highest level” and it went nowhere. “I was there sitting when somebody made a complaint against one individual at the highest level and the person making the complaint had to answer more questions than the person that was trying to get to the young lady.”

Look what we come to! This is a real low for the service and the country. No wonder some of them don't care about their performance. Persons should be able to file complaints without any fear of victimization. One should not feel or be made to sell themselves for survival in this place. This is wrong on so many levels and to think we up and down bragging bout we one of the best.

What is the governor, premier and all our elected officials doing to combat this issue. By the way isn't sexual harassment against the law. STOP THIS NONSENSE. LEAVE THEM ALONE. Sodom and Gomorah was destroyed over this.

Hon. Fahie, you can't tell men to just go in the weight room and defend themselves. If they are being mistreated in the workplace and they complain to you, they have a right to make a complaint and you are expected to deal with it accordingly. Equality for men and women.

Our sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, in-laws, cousins, friends.....etc must be able to go to work either in the public or private sector and not have to deal with sexual discrimination, sexual harassment or unwanted sexual advances.....etc. The environment must be created to arrest this deviant behaviour. There is no place in the work place for sexual predators and exploiters. The culture must change. Laws, regulations and policies must be devised, implemented and enforced. There must severe penalties for violating the rules, ie, up to termination.

Moreever, complaints of sexual harassment, sexual destimination or unwanted sexual advances must be truthful. They are serious charges and should not be used for malicious purposes to hide poor performance, to get a even with someone, blackmail someone.....etc. Similar severe consequences should be employed for persons who maliciously complain about sexual harassment, sexual discrimnation...etc. People have to protect themselves , ie, avoid certain circumstances, avoid certain conversations......etc. The work place should exude pride and professionalism. Government has enough challenges; it does not need any more. As the Hon Fahie says keep your hands to yourselves and off of people girl and boy children. Girl and boy children must carry themselves with dignity. Disagree with the Hon Fahie that men should go to the gym and pump iron to defend against sexual predators. No. Government should be an equal opportunity employer with equal protection under the law.

He is telling the truth, you all just want to sweep it under the rug and make it go away. Well, it is in the open now. Sexual Harrassment on the job is not cool. The higher ups should be forced to stand before a judge and made to confess or step down from their positions. Eventually you got to clean under your rug. Trust me someone is going to snap. People can only take things for so long.

Either he is not telling the truth or he is a coward. As a minister and supposedly a man of integrity, spewing serious and alleged offences with no specifics is unbecoming and sullies his own character. If it is transparency that is needed in Gov,then he should be demonstrating by example. Gossip and hearsay is very ugly on anybody much less Andrew who talking about lack of transparency.

Andrew must know that having knowledge of a crime and not reporting it to the appropriate office is also a crime. So Andrew then, has declared himself to be a criminal and by association,is also guilty of the crimes committed against the peoples girl. Children. If Andrew isn,t talking about what and which unnamed minister is an unfaithful husband he mouthing off about other alleged sexual behaviours .....hmmmm

If he is so outraged and so protective of the girl children dem virtue, then he should welcome being sued for telling the truth. He must have been on the scene and heard and seen the offences or have evidence from the alleged victims.
It would be crazy for Andrew to be further reducing his status to washer woman of gossip and melee..

100% sexual harassment. You go to the higher ups and you are made to look like the bad person. They talk to you like you are nobody, they look down on you. You know, people talk about Civil Servants not doing there jobs, how the hell can you produce good work in a place where all this S..t is going on. Most people deal with it because they have bills to pay and they don't want to loose there jobs and jobs is hard to find.
