Kai de Castro lands job at Ports Authority; ‘Daddy’ is Chairman

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - It was last year 2014 that former Elmore Stoutt High School teacher Kai de Castro was found guilty of possessing a firearm and explosives by former Magistrate Dr Velon L. John.

Mr de Castro’s friend Kion Leonard was also a part of the verdict and the two men were fined $2k and given a two-year suspended sentence. This resulted in Mr de Castro losing his job as a teacher at the Elmore Stoutt High School.

New job at Ports

However, this week our news room was flooded with calls from the BVI Ports Authority staff telling us that Mr Kai de Castro, who is the son of the BVI Ports Authority Chairman J. Edward de Castro, has landed a job at the Ports Authority as a dock master and commenced work on Monday of this week.

The sources claimed that he only got the job because his father allegedly asked them at the Ports “to find something for him to do”.

It is unclear if the post was advertised to give other Virgin Islanders like the 27 year old Mr Kai de Castro the opportunity to apply.

Locals have the right to work

It is also important to note that Kai de Castro is a Virgin Islander who has the right to work in his country, however, the issue at hand is whether he was given special privilege and access to a job because his father is the Chairman of the BVI Ports Authority Board.

When contacted today, February 4, 2015, Managing Director of the BVI Ports Authority Claude O. Skelton Cline said that he did not know anything about the young man being employed there and that he would have to check with his Human Resource Department for verification. Asked whether we could call him back, Skelton Cline said, “No. Don’t call me back on that. I don’t deal with that. Once I verify with HR, I will tell HR whether or not we release the names of employees who work at Ports Authority.”

Efforts to reach Chairman of the Ports Authority Board J. Edward de Castro were unsuccessful. However, BVIPA Public Relations Office April T. Glasgow confirmed that Kai de Castro "has joined the BVIPA team as a Dockmaster."

WHEN IT COMES TO OUR OWN CHILDREN YOU KNOW STANDARDS AND ETHICS OUT THE WINDOW. That is why when the poor disenfranchised youths take from them life, liberty and possession its funny to me.

Kai de Castro is a Virgin Islander who has the right to work in his country and I don't see anything wrong if the Ports Authority gives him a job. This shows that he is willing to work and not be on the streets. Not because he got caught with a gun means he is a bad person or he cannot work. We should be happy for him and not try to take the job from him.

Your system is 30 years behind that's why I left, you oppress people. make your kids in the big apple so that they can get U.S ties. and oppress those who make theirs in your country. You go to the U.S and get green cards but make those who build your country wait 40 years to become a belonger. All the other islands system is 50 years past yours. So take that.

If he was out there robbing people because he didnt have a job, people would be saying, "his dad has a good position, why he dont help him get a job". Tortola people mind too small for me. Why is it that I do not hear such complaints when a man who was recently convicted of theft at the High Court is back working at Public Works, a job which would do well for a BVIslander. Love your people and be the first to show them love, do not leave it to outsiders to come and do it for you. Despite the conviction, he have a life to leave. So lets hope he learn from his stupidity.

Let us see and understand what is so wrong with this decision. The Port Authority is governed by rules, regulations and laws. Embedded in the Authority/s regulations is a clause which states that applicants with a criminal record are not eligible for employment with that Authority. Just where does Mr. DeCastro fit into this basic requirement. Does he have a criminal record? if the answer is yes, is the Authority aware of this? if the answer is yes, then why was he hired. You be the judge. There are scores of private companies with no such requirement which could meet his needs. Given the nature of his conviction, a Dock Master at the Port would be the last position one would expect to assign him to. But why not, look at who heads up that Authority.

There are many worthy young people who have worked hard at their studies without criminal records who have been overlooked for this position.

I wish this young man well and hope that he has put his past behind him.

Hmmmmm....I agree that he needs to get a job but given that he was caught with a gun and given that we have issues with a proliferation of guns coming into the country and we are not sure exactly how or when, I am not sure if PORTS AUTHORITY would have been the best place to put him..... Just saying. I am sure his dad could have used his influence to ask a friend to give him a job somewhere else.
