ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Information just reaching our news room from sources close to the main Opposition Virgin Islands Party (VIP) is that the second eldest daughter of the late Chief Minister, Cyril B. Romney, will be a candidate on the VIP ticket for the upcoming general elections.

Ms JoAnn ‘Roxie’ Romney, a businesswomen and indigenous Virgin Islander, is expected to be one of 13 candidates in the line-up on the VIP ticket expected to be made public on the night of Wednesday, May 6, 2015 after the governing body of the VIP, the Congress, holds a meeting and elections to ratify its candidates.

However, the party seems to be tight-lipped as to whether Ms Romney, who was very close to her father and worked on his many political campaigns, will be an At-Large candidate or run in a district.

Neither Ms Romney nor the VIP President, Carvin Malone, could be reached as of press time.

It is believed the VIP is expected to release an impressive list of candidates to take on the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP).

Roxie’s dad, Cyril B. Romney

Cyril B. Romney, a son of West End on the main island of Tortola, was born on March 1, 1931 and died in a Miami hospital on July 19, 2007.

Mr Romney served as Chief Minister of the Virgin Islands from 1983 to 1986. He also served as a member of the then Legislative Council from 1979 to 1995, some 16 years representing the Fifth District. He was the first Virgin Islander to hold the post of Financial Secretary, and was also a business leader in the Territory and the region.

Former Chief Minister Romney is credited with being the leader of the cruise industry, as well as the financial service industry, both sectors that have helped to take the tiny overseas territory to prosperity.

Roxie will join two other possible candidates with direct links to late Chief Ministers. Preston P. Stoutt, the son of the late Chief Minister H. Lavity Stoutt, has announced he will run as an Independent candidate in the First District and Natalio D. ‘Sowande Uhuru’ Wheatley is expected to be a candidate under the People’s Empowerment Party banner. He is the grandson of the late Chief Minister, Willard Wheatley.

Snap elections: Who were caught with pants down?

Since last year, Leader of the Opposition and former VIP Chairman Hon Ralph T. O’Neal OBE warned his VIP supporters and the country of snap elections and three months ago the VIP announced that the elections will be on July 6, 2015. With the House of Assembly now dissolved, the VIP is prepared to go to the polls as early as May 25, 2015 according to a party spokeswoman.

Party boss and Premier in waiting Hon Julian Fraser RA (R3) told our news site in an exclusive interview last week that his 43-year-old party is ready for elections.

The word on the street is that the NDP was not prepared to go to the polls so early and they themselves may have been caught with their pants down. This news site is investigating the reasons behind the election being brought up from the predicted July 6, 2015 date announced by the VIP.

We want decency in the house of assembly not conflict of interest with the NDP cast. Put an end to the self interest, cronyism, underhandedness and victimization.

All you must stop this stupidness about "catching people with their pants down" .The former government of St Kitts/Nevis said the same thing and now they are in opposition. However ,what we need to do and have is a set date for election for example 5th May every 5 years for proper presentation and process. This needs to be legislated. Proper campaigning, debates, etc. Not this rush in and rush process. All I have to say may the best team win even though I do need change.

The NDP is rushing off this election before the 16 million dollars done. They are trying to buy the voters like how they bought a few politicians. So please becareful with all the political gimmicks. Work will be starting all over the place to fool the voting public. Do not be fooled, vote for the VIP who built this country. The NDP is claiming fame off VIP projects. Everything in this country have the VIP's signature on it. On election day vote for the complete VIP team ALL THE WAY! DO NOT SPLIT YOUR VOTES. Just remember how the NDP starved us and laughed at us after some of us voted for them in 2011.

Snap elections are used to turn the attention of voters from negative policies and initiatives a current government is pursuing. They thought this snapping would do the job and thought wrong. We will not forget the victimization, we will not forget that they are waiting to inflict NHI on us, we will not forget the tax hikes. We will not forget the disrespect issued against persons who are not in the circle, and disrespect for people property we will not forget that $20 million consultancy bill and still had no money to do other necessary things. how soon they forget but we have not forgotten. By the way, snap elections also back fire.

I think Ms. Romney would make a wonderful leader. She has the acute business acumen for the right progressive policies and above all keeping the welfare of Islanders at the forefront in our world's ever changing globalist environment. And more importantly, she is tough as nails when it comes to fairness, but determined to keep the British Virgin Islands a model of indigenous strength and respect for its own self-determination.

I like Roxie as a person. She is affable and yes she is a successful businesswoman. But does it necessarily follow that she will be an effective leader in government? People are ready to give her their X at the mere prospect of her running in the elections but what are her plans? What is her vision for the country? What is she planning to do to take the country to the next level? We are yet to hear this. So on what basis is she getting your X for those who have made up their minds already.
    • Stetson (06/05/2015, 18:11) Like (0) Dislike (0) Reply
My10cents, a fair and honest question all prospective leaders should be asked. I believe Roxie asks herself this question all the time not only with government officials but more importantly her role. I think she understands all too well that any vision for the BVIs must come from the grassroots level, period. She understands that what is happening in the NDP only serves an elite percentage with no remedy or recourse for real local concerns. If you remember, she had to fight to get a cell phone competitor in the BVIs to offset the monopolization of power with this industry in the islands. Frankly, she beat them. That's the kind of politician the people need who can stand toe to toe and not flinch with entrenched power. Moreover, she may not have all the answers, for that fact most politicians who say they do the people should be wary of. However, if she doesn't know the answer you can bet she will go and dig until that answer is satisfactory with the people. Again, I cannot entreat strong enough that Roxie is about fairness and what the Islanders want. Her constitution would not have it any other way.
