J’ca are CBC Women’s Champs!
The Dominican Republic had to settle for the Silver Medal. The top scorers of the game were Sasha Dixon and Shenneika Smith of Jamaica, both with 14 points.
Shenneika Smith opened the scoring with three straight points for the Jamaican squad, Marlem Caceres quickly responded for her team with three points, to tie the game and neither team could pull a decisive advantage; with the score at the end of the first quarter, Jamaica 14 – Dominican Republic 12.
Genesis Evangelista in a drive opened the scoring for the second quarter, and tied the game at 14, Jamaican answered with a 4 -0 run to escape to escape to 18 -14. The Dominicanas tied the game at 18, what came from there was an interchange of lay-ups after steals on defense; at the end of the first half the score was tied at 22.
The top scorer of the first half was Jennifer George of Jamaica with 8 points.
A mid-range basket from Mitchell and a three-pointer from Shenneika Smith gave Jamaica a five point lead, 31 – 26.
From the free-throw line Andujar, combined with a basket by Gomez to reduce the Jamaican lead to one-point, 31 -30.
Smith took the Jamaican lead to two points, 32 -30. Dixon scored a runner in drive to give them a four-point lead, 34-30, at the end of the third quarter.
Santos from the baseline opened the fourth quarter, for the Dominican Republic. Dixon answered for Jamaica from the three-point line. Morton became the go to player for Dominicana after a basket tied the score at 43, with 3:20 remaining. George responded from the paint, 45 - 43.
Jamaica was on top of the scoreboard, when Shenneika Smith went to the free-throw line, she scored 1 of her 2 tries, 49 -45. Dominicana couldn’t score and had to foul Mitchell; she scored her two free-throws and gave her team a 6 point lead, 51 – 45, with 9 seconds to play. Mitchell stole the ball, passed it ahead to Smith who dribbled the time out, to take the Gold Medal.

US Virgin Islands had earlier claimed the Bronze Medal and the last spot at the Centro baskets, in Mexico, with a 66-52 victory over Trinidad and Tobago.
Samantha Wallace of Trinidad and Tobago was the first to score for her team, but Lanese Bough quickly responded for the US Virgin Islands. What followed was an offensive on-slough from the team of the Trinidad and Tobago, who took a 6 point lead, 11 – 17.
At the end of the first quarter though the USVI was down just two to enter the second quarter two points behind, 17 – 15 and then jumped into the lead with a six point streak.
The half time score was 34-29 in favour of the USVI and by the end of the 3rd quarter it had grown t 49-36 after a series of fast transitions and zonal defense by the USVI team. A streak of 7 – 0 by Trinidad and Tobago opened the action of the fourth quarter, 49 – 43, but the team of the Virgin Islands quickly responded with a 12 - 0 run, to take their advantage to 18 points, 61 – 43. Joelisa Cooper scored from long-distance to break her team no-score run.
The advantage established was too high, the victory, 65 -52, the bronze medal and the last spot in the 2014 Centro basket Championship belonged to the team of the US Virgin Islands.
The top scorer of the game was Natalie Day (ISV) with 16 points.
