ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone (AL), in his personal capacity via a social media post, called the events of January 18, 2021, in the Virgin Islands 'a global attack' on the territory.

The day, which happened to be Martin Luther King Day, was marked by Governor Augustus J.U. Jaspert announcing a Commission of Inquiry into the affairs of government, following claims of alleged corruption and victimisation.

Press onslaught put VI in spotlight

What followed was an onslaught of international press turning attention to the VI, accusing the Fahie administration of financial mismanagement in government spending, from as far back as the previous National Democratic Party (NDP) era of governance.

What was significant, however, was that articles emanating out of the UK, made no distinction between the spending under the Fahie administration, and that of the NDP Government. One Social Commentator, Claude O. Skelton-Cline, has since speculated that the UK was preparing to take over the VI, and was using the press as a prelude to justifying the move.

“I remember and will never forget the iconic speech given by the late Honourable Deloris Christopher when debating the "High-Level Framework", which was authored by the British and championed by our outgoing Governor, Gus Jaspert,” Mr Malone said in a Wednesday, January 20, 2021, social media post.

“It was being forced on the BVI for signature and with her resistance and the elections of February 25th 2019, it was never fully implemented,” he remarked.

CoI announcement designed to 'fill room with Smoke' - Hon Malone

With a preverbal “Clear the smoke from the room!” in reference to the 1920’s term “Smoke filled room” political decision making, Hon Malone said the CoI announcement of Governor Jaspert was designed to put VI in the spotlight.

He related that the potential and sought after-effects of the “Global Attack” via the press which started on January 18, 2021, equate to coverage of events like the official BREXIT exit on January 1, 2021, the Storming of the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, and the Hurricanes of 2017.

Other significant press coverage events include 9/11, and the official declaration of Novel Coronavirus outbreak as a global pandemic on March 12, 2020.

While Hon Malone did not mention specific events, rather the dates, he said, “The world awaits the details of the terms and conditions of the COI that was preempted with spectacular GLOBAL announcements designed to fill the room with smoke”.

Mr Malone reminded that the social media post was personal and not in an official capacity.

well sah - what nonsense i reading here - all those other events got coverage world wide on TV - not one mention of the BVI on the national news anyplace.

seems like there will be a lot of scurrying around in that smoke filled room or is it crabs in a barrel time ?

The BVI being complacent about pressing issues, corruption, victimization because of who you know, whose buttocks you scratch, whose elbow you rub, brought this on itself by allowing a sore to fester and as the gangrene spread it became noticeable to others allowing action to be taken to remedy it.

My view is that if the governor cared anything about the BVI he would have handled this matter in a more professional manner.
He got the outcome he intended by putting the BVI in a very negative light on the International platform.
But it’s our own Uncle Toms who don’t have any real allegiance to the BVI keep running to him.
The slave masters didn’t go after the slaves, it was the blacks who sold their own into slavery.
We are selling out our BVI to the slave master whose sole purpose is to divide and conquer us!

You have a point,, Bringing the BVI in the global high light in a negative way,,,, But it's your VIP government that started it,,. Let me remind you of two decisions your government made that put the BVI in a very bad light globally,. You all announced to the world that the BVI will only accept Nationals, I was getting text messages and emails from all over the world asking if this is true,. The clip from envy News paper saying that was in every news paper, it was global News because it was unbelievable,,,,, Second, You all sent back two nurses who landed at beef Island for minor mistakes that could have easily sorted out, Nurses that been serving us for more than 15 yrs u all humiliated them in a pandemic while bring in Can't speak English Cubans, don't you think this Was global News,,, It was *-Bvi sent back two of their nurses after landing*. That was the Clip in major News papers,,,,,, Those are the things that left a bitter taste in the international community, including britain,,,. U all enjoyed humiliating others unnecessarily,,,,,,So, stop the crying,,, The working is round,,,. The BVI is a beautiful place,,, One the most beautiful place in the world,,, it's the decisions that messing It up.

When the pandemic started you can say unpopular decisions were made but most importantly how many people died from the PANDEMIC in the BVI

One!!! One person died thanks to their strict measures. Clearly our local government cared more about human life than what you all thought!!!!

Bring back the dead bring them back!

Let the investigations of negligence commence on the lives that are on the hands of world leaders!

Disgusting. To compare an INVESTIGATION into POTENTIAL corruption with an act of terrorism in which thousands of innocent people were killed is all that much worse than the fearmongering this man has spread already. This would appear to be an admission of guilt! What do these guys have to fear if they have done nothing wrong? Democratic Law & Order prevails!

As a son of this soil who was born in the BVI, educated here in the BVI, with the exception of pursuing my tertiary educated overseas and have worked no where else other then here in my beloved country I feel both a sense of sadness and anger as a result of the announcement of the Commission of Inquiry by the Government. What disappoints and angers me most is that many of my fellow BVIslanders (sons and daughters of the soil) have expressed nothing but jubilation since the Governor's announcement as if a COI is something that ought to be celebrated. I for one cannot and will not consider a COI something that should be celebrated because it paints the BVI in a negative light throughout the region and the rest of the world. The image it paints is that our territory, our home, our little nation is corrupt and therefore every one or rather every local much be corrupt. Yes! they are elements of corruption in the BVI like every other country or territory in the world including the UK, which should not be tolerated in any form, yes there is drug dealing like most countries including the UK, and changes needed to be made to our system of government including the laws governing how Government contracts are awarded, how persons should be appointed to certain positions in the Civil Service and appointed to Statutory Boards ect. But to celebrate the call for a COI like so many of my fellow BVIslanders have done and no doubt will continue to do baffling. I for one don't want to see the UK take control of the BVI. It will set us back years.

It’s not a global attack. It’s a decision to have a look to see whose hands have been in the cookie jar. Why the panic?
