ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Bishop of the New Life Baptist Church John I. Cline has posed the question whether the United Kingdom Government is intentionally trying to undermine the Virgin Islands' financial services sector for their own benefit.

He posed this question on the television programme Cross Talk, which was aired on Saturday February 27, 2016 on CBN Television Channel 51 between the hours of 7:00 pm and 8:00 pm.

“The UK Government has been on this path where it seems they want to undermine financial services. That's a big threat. And they way they have been trying to do it [is to make us] reveal the beneficial owner of the companies that we form,” he said.

“Anytime they are successful in doing that, in forcing the hand of their overseas territories, they know, the UK Government knows, the United States knows and these companies that are pushing for this know that they will destroy our industry,” he said.

According to Cline, it seems that they are hell bent on doing that and it looks like they want to “send us back into slavery.”

He asked whether the UK was just seeking to self preserve or whether they were just greedy.

Bishop Cline said that the UK and other large countries don't live by the same rules and this makes him believe that they are out to destroy smaller countries like the VI.

He said there seem to be a lot of attempts to marginalise the Caribbean islands and the VI is not immune to that.

He said because of the some 60 percent of revenue which comes from financial services, if that is to be undermined then it would mean that people will not be able to educate their children and afford the amenities to which they would have been accustomed.

“I am not on the inside so I don't know what the leaders of the country are putting their heads together and coming up with. But I hope that they are thinking and coming up with something,” said Cline.

Before you look at the seriousness of what's happening in this territory as it relates to our future and future generations (including your children and grand children), you choose instead to criticize a man and try and bring him down (as usual) with judgements. Old news!! If he is so greedy and wicked as you and others portray him to be, you dont think that God will know and be his judge? You seemed to have scanned the article, picked up a word to try to spread more hate and poison against the man; and neglect to respond about the article itself. Shame! While we're knocking down each other out of hate, jealousy, covetousness, selfishness, etc. "Outsiders" are coming in and benefitting from our foolishness. Wake up sleeper; this is no time for pettiness. No time for "children melee'"! We need each other, and until we do come together, the possibilities of going right back where we came from is a sad but true reality. I pray that it doesn't come to that in my lifetime, or ever.

the man is right; the UK & USA wants they citzens to pay more tax directly to them and stop sheltering the funds in places like BVI: this territory needs to find an alternative to financial services such a spots Tourism, medical Tourism and simply diversifying the economy... these are things with good leadership that can be done....

@ LOL: the last time I check the man was a citzen of the territory.. while others are simply criticizing everything; the man is offering some solutions to issues that are affecting the territory...if you are a citzen and simply want to sit back and remain silent that's wrong; stand up and be counted if you are a pastor, teacher or a crook make some noise!!!!

alot of telecommunication on these type matters, even reading these stories on net that VINO puts out - well a lot of
the time the computer strangely gets knocked off the net, or the phone calls, say it is banking business or the content
is about all this stuff - it gets cut off or cannot complete. the US and UK are the most able to to do this via their
'intelligence' agencies. someone is desperate and crazy to keep anyone around here from knowing anything...
someone is absolutely remotely intefereing with anything to do with banking by those in the BVI. Guess who?

    Stick to talking about God.

Do you really think the UK wants the BVI to fail? Then it has to spend lots of money bailing the BVI out. It's still got overall responsibility for the British Overseas Territories - it would be pretty stupid to cause it to fail.

It is crystal clear to me that Dr. Smith is using Pastor Cline to break the news concerning the recent visit to the Territory by a large UK delegation. Dr. Smith needs to come clean and tell it as it is. The U.K is once again insisting that the register of ownership which Financial Services has been instructed to put in place be acted upon with dispatch. Also, the Port Project is of great concern to them and will be addressed sooner than later.
Dr. Smith tell the people the truth.
