Is politics being played with distribution of relief items?

- Some districts claimed to be discriminated against, but persons declined to go on record

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- In the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, which devastated the Virgin Islands (VI) on September 6, 2017, leaving death, massive destruction, overwhelming loss of homes, boats, automobiles, and businesses, the reality on the ground is that people desperately need help.

Many counties around the world have pledged food and cash aid, including the British Government, the colonial power of the VI.

Many of the food and water aid from the Caribbean countries have arrived, along with those from the United Kingdom Government, and they have been distributed.

However, some districts have cried foul, claiming that their food distribution centres have been slow to receive its promised items. One lady, a mother of three who did not want her name to be used said, "they told us to be there at 12:00 noon, when we got there no one was at the centre to hand out the items...we were in line until 2:00 PM until someone came to give us some water and canned goods."

Discrimination?

Even one elected Member who was reluctant about talking to our newsroom, as the Member's government is in power, said "I am tired begging for stuff for my district...It's so unfair but...."

The National Democratic Party Member declined to comment further.

There were also unconfirmed reports that in some districts, some elected officials on both sides of the aisle were reportedly playing politics and handing out items based on who supported them.
