ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - With the introduction of pre-events that were held last week, there are tight battles in both A and B Divisions, of the Inter Primary Track and Field Championships, which begins for the “B” Division Schools today, Wednesday March 15, 2017, at the A.O. Shirley Grounds.

Attracting schools from Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke, the competition concludes on Thursday March 16, with the “A” Division battle for supremacy.

The 11 schools in the B Division—schools with an enrolment of less than 100 students between Grades 2-6—were scheduled to kick off the action at 10 AM today at the A. O. Shirley Grounds, following an opening ceremony and parade of teams.

B Division title up for grabs

With defending champion Joyce Samuel Primary moving up to the A Division this year, the B Division title is up for grabs, as a tight race is on following the pre-events.

Former champs Ivan Dawson have a two point lead over Jost Van Dyke, at the completion of the U11 Boys and Girls and the 13+ Boys and Girls Long Jump and the U11 Boys and Girls and U13 Boys and Girls Baseball Throw.

Ivan Dawson had amassed 45 points to Jost Van Dyke’s 43. Lenora Delville accumulated 42. Both Alexandrina Maduro and Virgin Gorda’s Robinson O’Neal are in a fourth-place, tied with 36 points. Pelican Gate occupies sixth place with 28 points followed by Isabella Morris with 26. Cedar International had 23 and Corner Stone, 10.

Anegada’s Claudia Creque school who were unable to participate because of inclement weather, will contest the respective divisions in which they had pre-events athletes entered, with the other classes and their scores factored into the competition.

A Division schools do battle tomorrow

Schools in the A Division will take to the track at 10:00 AM on Thursday. St George’s, on the strength of their Boys who won every division of the Long Jump and Baseball Throw, lead perennial champs Althea Scatliffe by four points, 57-53. Willard Wheatley are third with 43, while there’s a three-way tie for fourth between new comers Joyce Samuel, Francis Lettsome and Enis Adams, all on 33 points. Ebenezer Thomas lie seventh with 29 points and Bregado Flax round out the field with 25.

Following each division’s competition, awards will be doled out to Division Champions in each age group as well as the Victor and Victrix Ludorum, for the Boy and Girl with the highest individual scores. Team plaques will also be presented to the top three highest scoring teams.

Besides medals for first, second and third place, positions 4-8 will be awarded ribbons.
