CANE GARDEN BAY, Tortola, VI- The tourism community of Cane Garden Bay (CGB) is mourning the loss of a man who was regarded as an iconic businessman in the tourism industry- Mr Stanley A. Hodge.

Mr Hodge passed away at a villa in Cane Garden Bay, Tortola, on Sunday, April 5, 2020 after a period of illness.

He was 74 years of age, having been born on February 13, 1946.

Mr Hodge was known as one of the first persons to set up a beach bar at Cane Garden Bay and once operated a restaurant.

He also owned Carrie’s Island Comfort Inn and Stanley’s Welcome Villas in Cane Garden Bay up to the time of his passing.

‘Stanley was tourism’- Hon Melvin M. Turnbull

Second District Representative, Honourable Melvin M. Turnbull described the late Mr Hodge as an iconic figure in the Virgin Islands.

“He was tourism in Cane Garden Bay, he was a leader in tourism,” Hon Turnbull commented, recalling that Mr Hodge started with selling triggerfish.

“That was the only fish he used to sell at his restaurant and then he started doing the burgers and fries, which had become world renowned. And then everybody knew Stanley’s Welcome Bar.”

Hon Turnbull said Mr Hodge served the community well and became a personal friend of his.

A respectable man

“He is somebody I looked up to all my life, he has always been a respectable person and at the same time he was somebody you didn’t want to cross because he wasn’t afraid to say what he wanted to say,” Hon Turnbull told Virgin Islands News Online.

He shared that one of the fondest memories of the late Mr Hodge is of 2015 when he first ran for office in the Second District with the National Democratic Party (NDP).

“Mr Hodge said ‘Who you running with?’ and I told him, he said ‘don’t come a step further cause I am not supporting them at all.”

Hon Turnbull noted too that there were some rains and floods in 2016 and a portion of Mr Hodge’s hillside fell down but he assured Mr Hodge he would get the problem fixed, which he did.

He said Mr Hodge had personally met him to express his gratitude.

The Second District Representative, who is also related to Mr Hodge, said he met and prayed with Mr Hodge while he was in hospital prior to him being flown overseas for further treatment.

“I think he was satisfied in that he had done his work, where he has reached out and served and looked out for who he had looked out for.

“It is a tremendous loss to the village of Cane Garden Bay and to the Territory, Mr Turnbull said, while extending condolences to the family.

“We just want them to know that God is still in control.”

‘He used to help everybody’- Delvet Hodge

Virgin Islands News Online also spoke to one of Mr Hodge’s sons, Delvet Hodge aka ‘Del’, who confirmed that Mr Hodge passed away on Sunday, April 5, 2020.

He briefly spoke to our newsroom about his late father, describing him as a Good Samaritan.

“One thing I can say he was a sharing and helpful person. He used to help everybody, whether he knew you or not,” Mr Delvet Hodge said.

A date of burial has not been announced; however, there are also unconfirmed reports are that Mr Hodge had requested cremation.

Mr Hodge was an icon. He was one of the people in these British Virgin Islands who laid the foundation for the Tourism Industry. When no other restaurant had live steel and music, lobsters and fish...You could find it at Stanley’s Bar and Restaurant. He made T-shirts, had the swing on the beach, had pig roasts...Stanley made an indelible contribution to this territory..RIP Sir

Stanley RIP. I had many influences in the Hospitality industry most of them from my village Cane Garden Bay. Stanley was in the top three of thise influencers. Stanley was Mr. Tourism in every sense. Restaurant, Villas, Guest houses, trucking and who could forget the large set of his everyday clients for years, the school children on his safari bus going to town. Orderly, stern, carasmatic, honest, heplful and a displinarian that was the Stanley I knew. I could go on for days and weeks of my childhood to young adult memories and interaction with Mr. Hodge, but to clarify how his teachings influenced me most. I would simply say some of the activities we successfully did at De Loose Mongoose were exact or close replica of what I experienced in my time at Stanleys Beach Bar, from music to pig roast and menus. Im.happy I got to tell him that and seek his advice on many occasions. A Hero, A Friend, An Influential community figure. Never to be forgotten.

My husband Jim and I met Stanley Hodge in the early 1970s, he was our favourite place to go and we always took all of our guests and we had plenty, to Stanley’s first. Stanley was a wonderful friend and he had a great sense of humour, We watched his restaurant grow and also his condos on the hillside and we asked him one day where he would travel first now that he was doing so well. He replied why should I go anywhere I’m already in paradise! Stanley was the best ambassador to Tortola and a wonderful friend. Rest in peace my friend, Jim will be waiting to hear how a Tortola is faring during these stressful days. My sincere condolences to all the family and to his many Friends.

Am very sad to hear this - my neighbour and landlord for over 10 years, I will treasure all the memories, some scary, most hilarious and lots of chatting under a tree - it was a good friendship, he was one in a million - will miss you but grateful for those times. Condolences to all Stanley's family and friends and the whole CGB community.

Stanley was the "best man" for my love to tortola. my friend Thomas and me from germany were the first renters 1989 from his house number 7B. hourly long conversations for the upcoming 31 years up the hill brought our thoughts and mindsets together. thank you Stanley beeing an important guide in my life - and so many lifes. selfless his offering to me, using his facilities from his beach bar for my 28 friends on millenium. just one of countless things he did all his life.
    tears from your german friend

Stanley was an incredible person and the reason we always returned to Cane Garden Bay. Knowing that most of the people who rented from him were escaping the stresses of everyday life, he made sure you didn't have any worries once you arrived. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his Family :)
