‘I will not be a pushover'- Melvin 'Mitch’ Turnbull
At a political rally held in the parking area near Myett’s in Cane Garden Bay on May 14, 2015, the members of the National Democratic Party were out in full support of the young man who everyone said could get things done as he has a record of leadership and management of youth and projects affecting youth.
In his ‘son of a preacher man’ style of delivery, Mitch was an easy sell to the large turnout as he appealed to them to ‘make the switch to Mitch.’
Present District Two representative Honourable J. Alvin Christopher will be stepping aside to make way for Elford W. Parsons who will be running for the People’s Empowerment Party in the district. For the Virgin Islands Party (VIP), Rajah A. Smith will be running.
Turnbull told the residents gathered that he will listen to their concerns and take those concerns back to his ministers for their action. He said that he was not promising them the world, but that he would do his best to represent their interest in the district.
“Tonight I am not here to make any promises. I am here to pledge my commitment to you, the people of this Second District, that I am a passionate, present and committed leader. Tonight I am here to lay out plans for this district. I am certain that I would be able to accomplish these things, not on my own strength but the strength of God whom I rely on,” he said.
“Our district needs a leader whose attitude, passion, drive, commitment and dedication meet the job requirements. Tonight I am pledging to you that I Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull am that leader.”
He said he needs the supporters and their vote come Election Day. “I understand that I cannot be all things to all people but what I can do is serve to the best of my ability.”
Seeking to work for the people
Turnbull explained that he was not seeking to be in charge of the people of the Second District but to be their employee, to serve them. “Everything that I am, everything that I have become in my 35 years of life is because of the people of this district and the experiences that I have had in this district,” he said.
He added that it would be a collaboration between the voter and him as representative. “I don’t believe in giving excuses, I only believe in giving results,” he said. “I will not play the blame game with you. I will stand up, I will speak up, I will let your concerns be heard,” he said.
You will see how money spent
Turnbull made the point that he will not be a pushover because of his age or because most of his service was given around young people and issues affecting them. He promised he will be able to look into the needs of all the people in the district.
“I am willing to do whatever it takes to represent the people of the Second District,” he said. “I give you my word that I will not sit on $120,000 a year and you not see and hear how it is spent. You will know, you will see, you will feel how that money was spent,” he said, noting that the baton should have been passed a long time ago.
