ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Outspoken former Deputy Premier of the Virgin Islands, R. Dancia Penn-Sallah QC/OBE, now an independent At-Large Candidate contesting the 2019 General Elections in the Virgin Islands (VI), says she welcomes the development that more women are entering politics.

During an episode of “The Raw Truth” on PSI Online Radio, on Tuesday, February 12, 2019, she told host Kenneth G. Gladstone that women are yet to ascend to the highest heights of leadership in the regional political arena and she is confident that as a woman, she is completely fit to lead.

Strong Commitment to service

“I am a person who have and has always had a strong commitment to service and of public service, I am a woman, yes, and I am very proud of being a woman, I pride my femininity and I believe that women have very important and special roles to play in society,” Mrs Penn-Sallah told the listening audience.

Further, she says that it is her belief that women are equal to men and are entirely capable of running countries as has been proven by women in history and in the Bible.

“Women have been very strong and accomplished leaders and I have no doubt at all, that the fact that I am a woman, does not put me at any disadvantage… in being able to lead this country,” she said.

Special Qualities to Leadership

According to Mrs Penn-Sallah, “It is a well-documented fact that women have and can bring special qualities to leadership… including in business and in government.”

However, the former Deputy Premier says the region still has a long way to go, “there has not been such in the Caribbean region and indeed in most places of the world, women have not ascended to the highest heights of leadership in the political arena as one might have expected.

“I am a woman, I believe that I am a very feminine woman and I have every confidence that I am able to and fit to lead,” the Queen’s Council said affirmatively.

Political History

Mrs Penn-Sallah first ran with the VIP in 2007 and won representing the Eighth District before running again in 2011 and was not re-elected, being defeated by now Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Marlon A. Penn (R8). In her third bid for elective office, she ran as an Independent in 2015 and lost yet again coming in 8th out of 16 candidates with a mere 1,837 votes.

She showed no leadership as Minister of Health. As Premier you need to do a lot more than go to every event to have your picture taken

Actually, the prime minister of Barbados is a woman. I'm beginning to get the feeling that Ms P is running just to attain another personal accomplishment.
