‘I have been listening to the people of the 2nd’ – Rajah A. Smith
He was the featured speaker at a rally last evening, May 27, 2015 in Cane Garden Bay in the vicinity of Myett’s as the VIP continued its march towards June 8, 2015 with 12 days of campaigning to go.
Faced many challenges
Smith said as a young man he has faced many challenges since leaving school. “But I decided very early on in my life that if I wanted to make a difference I had to make the right choices,” he said. He added that those experiences make him ready to serve the Second District.
He said he wanted to see a wider picture and to discuss with the residents the need for change and the readiness to work for that change.
Among some of the concerns he cited for the district are sewerage infrastructure, roads, sea walls, healthcare, water shortage, and the need to upgrade old facilities throughout the district.
“I am asking for your vote to be your representative.” Smith said that once voted in, he will see to the relocation of the sewerage plant in Cane Garden Bay to accommodate the growing residential and commercial population and spoke of the possibility of submerging the pump station so as not to affect the Ivan Dawson Primary School.
He promised wider roads and upgraded drainage systems in Jost van Dyke while saying that he will see to the installation of sidewalks “from bridge to bridge” in Cane Garden Bay and in Brewers Bay.
No more part time healthcare
Mr Smith said the district cannot continue to accept what is essentially a part time health care service on the island of Jost van Dyke.
“We have heard the excuses of the Government but we would like to tell them that every single day young doctors are dispatched to the most remote places in the world so this excuse of waiting for a full time doctor is not acceptable nor accepted.”
He said he will push for a 24-hour water supply in the various communities within the Second District.
Expansion of schools
The young youth leader said that as the VIP recognises the need for early childhood education, there will be an expansion of the primary schools in the district.
Noting that the district has some of the most spectacular beaches in the territory, Smith said programmes will be implemented to protect the environment and also to create opportunities for the people of the district to work in a revitalised eco-tourism industry.
As a representative, Smith assured he would be prepared to discuss new tourism initiatives for the district so that it remains a highly competitive player in the tourism of the country.
Smith said too that he supports a plan for the increase in the number of guest houses within the district and have existing ones advertise more widely and target new markets. “The aim of this plan is to encourage repeat business and to continue to improve our tourism services,” he said.
Contesting in the Second District for the National Democratic Party is Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull and for the People’s Empowerment Party is Elford W. Parsons.
