CANE GARDEN BAY, Tortola, VI – The Virgin Islands Party's candidate for the Second District, Rajah A. Smith, said that despite his age, he is ready and has the passion to serve the people of the district. He also said that over the past weeks he has been listening to the people and as such he can further understand what their needs are.

He was the featured speaker at a rally last evening, May 27, 2015 in Cane Garden Bay in the vicinity of Myett’s as the VIP continued its march towards June 8, 2015 with 12 days of campaigning to go.

Faced many challenges

Smith said as a young man he has faced many challenges since leaving school. “But I decided very early on in my life that if I wanted to make a difference I had to make the right choices,” he said. He added that those experiences make him ready to serve the Second District.

He said he wanted to see a wider picture and to discuss with the residents the need for change and the readiness to work for that change.

Among some of the concerns he cited for the district are sewerage infrastructure, roads, sea walls, healthcare, water shortage, and the need to upgrade old facilities throughout the district.

“I am asking for your vote to be your representative.” Smith said that once voted in, he will see to the relocation of the sewerage plant in Cane Garden Bay to accommodate the growing residential and commercial population and spoke of the possibility of submerging the pump station so as not to affect the Ivan Dawson Primary School.

He promised wider roads and upgraded drainage systems in Jost van Dyke while saying that he will see to the installation of sidewalks “from bridge to bridge” in Cane Garden Bay and in Brewers Bay.

No more part time healthcare

Mr Smith said the district cannot continue to accept what is essentially a part time health care service on the island of Jost van Dyke.

“We have heard the excuses of the Government but we would like to tell them that every single day young doctors are dispatched to the most remote places in the world so this excuse of waiting for a full time doctor is not acceptable nor accepted.”

He said he will push for a 24-hour water supply in the various communities within the Second District.

Expansion of schools

The young youth leader said that as the VIP recognises the need for early childhood education, there will be an expansion of the primary schools in the district.

Noting that the district has some of the most spectacular beaches in the territory, Smith said programmes will be implemented to protect the environment and also to create opportunities for the people of the district to work in a revitalised eco-tourism industry.

As a representative, Smith assured he would be prepared to discuss new tourism initiatives for the district so that it remains a highly competitive player in the tourism of the country.

Smith said too that he supports a plan for the increase in the number of guest houses within the district and have existing ones advertise more widely and target new markets. “The aim of this plan is to encourage repeat business and to continue to improve our tourism services,” he said.

Contesting in the Second District for the National Democratic Party is Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull and for the People’s Empowerment Party is Elford W. Parsons.

You know what saddens me most about you bloggers. You don't have the guts to do what any of these candidates are doing....i.e. standing up for their country and territory as a whole. Mr. Smith, don't mind the noise, just believe!!

The second district is quite competitive. Three young person vying and their vision for this area is quite eye opening. So let me see what will cause one to win outright. Here is Mr. Smith seems to have his hands on the pulse of JVD maybe the front runner there. Here's Mr. Turn bull also in the thick of the community affairs. CGB seems to be a lock for him. Here's Mr. Parson a bit older, experienced and surely not a pushover. It seems BB and surroundings is his. Hers the where the rubber meets the road. Can Turnbull get a significant number of votes from JVD and BB. This is also the same picture the other candidates face. Who can successfully gather votes from the other candidates. Now for the sort of representation required I would say only one newcomer can stand boldly against the big boys. BTW it would be nice is the various sponsors can get all three on one stage for a debate. Oh the thought is so sweet. What say you people. Debate, debate. Debate.

Democracy is the pulse of politics. Idiocy is the pulse of the foolish. I live in the 2nd district has a big family presence and not one family member has seen Mr Parsons or Mr Smith. That speaks volumes about their interests. Regardless of their subjective opinions and who they may think have their votes, everyone should be embraced.
