‘I am an advocate of free speech’ – Speaker Willock

-Says he seen victimization in HoA & it won’t happen under his watch
New Speaker of the Virgin Islands (VI) Fourth House of Assembly (HoA), Honourable Julian Willock, says the territory has absolutely nothing to fear regarding his ability to be fair and unbiased in the HoA, since he has history of advocating free speech and speaking out for the rights of voiceless people. Road Town, Tortola, VI - New Speaker of the Virgin Islands (VI) Fourth House of Assembly (HoA), Honourable Julian Willock, says the territory has absolutely nothing to fear regarding his ability to be fair and unbiased in the HoA, since he has a history of advocating for free speech and speaking out for the rights of voiceless people.

Hon Willock in an interview with JTV’s The Big Story with Cathy O. Richards, says that as an outsider he has seen victimisation and oppression under the Ingrid Moses-Scatliffe led Third HoA and according to him, such injustice won’t be allowed to happen under his watch.

I will not Victimise – Willock

“The House of Assembly, the rules are clear… my disposition has never been to victimise, actually I have fought and spoke out consistently against victimisation. I’ve seen in the last House of Assembly, where it was used to victimise people under the cloak of immunity,” he said.

The Speaker further said that due to the poor standards of the last House, many were oppressed and their questioning dismissed, “I would not want to see that repeated anywhere,” he told Ms Richards on the March 14, 2019, edition of the show.

“I have seen under the last House of Assembly, where opposition members were dismissed. Dismissive where their questions were not answered truthfully, they were almost told to sit down and shut up… we will not repeat that,” Hon Willock said affirmatively while noting that he has no issues with blogs about him but will put his foot down on libel and other slanderous statements.

Fair & Impartial

“I will be fair and impartial, but I still have a duty as the Speaker to ensure that the government agenda… Hon Fahie, his legislative agenda is executed and carried out and it should not be hindered unnecessarily.”

According to Mr Willock, nothing about his character has changed since becoming speaker and he will continue to advocate for the expression of opinions without censorship or restraint, “I will be the same humble, caring Julian Willock and I am an advocate of free speech.”

Please don't forget that the new speaker has no influence over the content of this blog, and it is merely coincidence that this blog has carried so many positive interviews with him since he has appointed, and other (less biased blogs) have no carried so many.
