ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Dr Natalio D. 'Sowande Uhuru' Wheatley has dismissed talk that he is power hungry, a rolling stone and opportunist following his announcement that he was moving from the People’s Empowerment Party (PEP), where he was President, to the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) just over a week before its elections.

The talk show host and college lecturer ran unsuccessfully for public office in 2011 with the People’s Patriotic Alliance (PPA) and in 2015 with the People’s Empowerment Party (PPA) as an At-Large Candidate. His announcement came via a press release on November 21, 2016, stating that the VIP presents the most viable alternative to the governance of the National Democratic Party (NDP).

Dr Wheatley was responding to a question posed by a caller regarding his critics on the programme, Things to Talk on 780 AM ZBVI on Wednesday November 23, 2016.

Not shying away from criticism

He said he is in no way shying away from the critics’ opinion of him.

“You know when you take a step forward as a young person and you want to get involved in your community, and you put yourself front and centre, you are going to be exposed to criticism and I am in no way shying away from being criticised,” he said. “Just like the elected officials I have my points of view on what they should be doing and should not be doing and in the same way people will have their opinions of me.”

Power hungry? Oh no

“In terms of me being power hungry, those persons who know me would know for a fact that, that doesn’t meet and accurately reflect who I am as a person. I am a very humble person, I am not someone who would like to have the power over anyone in fact what I have been fighting for all along is to give power to masses of people."

He said he is a big believer in democracy and people being involved in a democratic process. “… and all that I have done since I have returned from schooling abroad is try to get involved in my community.”

Dr Wheatley pointed out that there were many young persons out there who would like to get involved in their community but become discouraged of the culture of criticism being experienced in the VI.

“But I am glad that I can be an example for some young persons, that even though as a young person you are going to be criticised that I am able to stand up and take some criticism I receive and keep going.”

Encouragements overwhelming

Several callers called into the programme with encouragements. One male caller had this to say:

“You have a very nice show and don’t worry with the critics that call you names. The move you made is a very good move because some people don’t want to see the BVI move forward. The main thing is we have to take this country back. We are going to stand up and make sure that this time the BVI is going to move forward and not backward.”

Dr Wheatley said since his move to the VIP the support has been overwhelming, “…And I could say it really invigorated me and really renewed my faith in the decency of the people we have here in the Virgin Islands.”

Dr Wheatley will also be vying for the presidency of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) at its internal elections on November 30, 2016.

He is a real opportunist. With the current sentiment of the country he is banking on a VIP win at the next election. If the NDP were still riding high he would be with them come next election. Sorry but he is desperate for a political appointment at any cost. No real moral values despite the talk.

You must not know this man! He obviously only joined VIP because the country is in DESPERATE need of new leadership since ayo going let NDP run the entire country to the ground and not blink an eye because they keep fattening ayo up with nice words and a lil check here and there. Silly people, this is our FUTURE we dealing with! Are you really that blind?

I wonder why our freedom fighters gave their lives for a set of people who just sits back, criticizes everything, and do nothing. Now here is a youngman who has been doing his part for years; a progressive and very aware young man who wishes to contribute in taking our country off the cliff- but we continue to find faults instead of solutions. Young man- keep doing what you perceive as your contribution- for LOVE of country.
    • Really? (24/11/2016, 10:28) Like (5) Dislike (28) Reply
What part has he actually been doing? Has he come up with any real and concrete solutions to take us off the cliff ? The answer is no. This is a young man that is intelligent and has great potential but sadly is blinded by just needing to be in the spot light. He talks for the sake of talking and is desperate for attention. The bid to be president of the VIP is not a good move. He needs to truly humble himself, come up with a plan, take a step back for a while and then maybe he could shine.

To Really- Point Taken. However, hasn't he been EDUCATING and Inspiring some of our younger generation as a LECTURER in our institution of higher learning? Isn't this a positive contribution to the progression of our country? How many more wayward children would we have on our streets if he was not doing his part? We must look at an individual holistically. One can do a hundred things right; and just happened to do one thing bad, and wow, one is completely written off without mercy. Our Ancestors' Weep!

@Sometimes. That is a good point and maybe that is where is his calling should be as an educator and not as a politician. Not everyone shines in the spotlight of politics. Education maybe his vocation. As I said he is an extremely intelligent young man and he will do well, I do not believe politics is the way forward for him.

To Really? I appreciate your perspective and it should be pondered upon as well. That is why it takes a country of inclusion to come up with a consensus conclusion. We all need to be part of the engagement in our country for it to function effectively. Thanks for sharing.

We would greatly love to see also, some persons like Colin O'Neal, Sonia Webster-Brewley, Nina O'Neal, Karl Dawson, Guy Hill, some Elton Leonards, alias- Political Observer, and other PASSIONATE Virgin Islanders come forward, regardless of the noise. Our people who fought for this country overcame the FEAR. And they as well- had many detractors. The status-quo runs deep and hard to break.

What about Sharie de castro.? She too should be added to this list. We need to rid ourselves of people who feel they have arrived and beyond reproach, and can now boast of not being hand to mouth. This type- too- need to be gone (too full of themselves and quickly forget how they get to where they are, at their fragile moment of supposed success). No good for the future of the Virgin Islands.

And those in the VIP need to embrace him and to mold him, just like how Ralph and Lavity molded most of them.

Natalio ignore the empty vessels on here spewing their crap at you - they got no ammunition! You were a vocal part of the fight for Beef Island not to go they way the NDP wanted it to go. You fought for the people with the way the NHI was introduced without proper vetting and legislation to assist the people.

So to ALL and sundry whom FEAR the vocal fighters in the BVI who are NOT a part of the political elitists - gtfoh with your lip service and tearing down of this young man! I hope other like-minded individuals are encouraged by this and step up to the plate as we evidently need a new direction for this country. You got a vote from me homie! I see that you cannot do any worst than the current crop of weeds we have growing down at Administration Drive!

someone needs to jump in. No one else is. At least he is educated, been in the system, has a radio show, knows the issues, is connected, has talked to people, has a point of view and cares about the BVI without ego. If he is new doesn't mean he is ignorant. He will have fresh ideas.

I am excited that such a talented and sincere young man is stepping into the arena on behalf of the people. I saw him fight for Beef Island against a government ignoring its own laws, and speak up against issues affecting community. The fact that he DOES speak up is positive instead of all these arm-chair quarterbacks criticizing. At least he is DOING something. He cares about the people and frankly, ANY new blood in VIP is good. We need to foster this for new ideas or be doomed for more of the same. It is OK to stay in the news. Just stick to the issues and educate the people with your stance. Don't whine or bad mouth and you will be the adult in the room.

This man is a lecturer of mine at HLSCC. This man is a KING and I say KING because that is exactly what he is
by ancient lineage though he has little to no honor in his own country. I may not know him on a personal level but as it relates to his plans for the success of the British Virgin Islands, I say: “True wisdom is less presuming than folly. The wise man doubteth often, and changeth his mind; the fool is obstinate, and doubteth not; he knoweth all things but his own ignorance.”

That quote originates from Africa where leadership was very important and as a people we have strayed away from the teachings of OUR people and gravitated to the teachings of others and our ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL predicament in the British Virgin attests this!! For some reason we are afraid to make the link between the two but I am 19 years old and I see the correlation between the past and now! We need to become conscious of our conditions as a people and stop denying our faults that are often influenced by entities that we CANNOT SEE and CANNOT CHALLENGE. Hmm. Sowande you taught me well and I am grateful for the seeds you've planted in the minds of many students like myself who are actually interested in INTELLECTUAL DEVELOPMENT and CULTURAL REVOLUTION.. This BVI is my only home and I trust that your intentions for the BVI is fair and operative.

    Love & Respect.

Just Beautiful. I am Inspired! He is a good man indeed. Most good men and women in OUR Virgin Islands are castigated if they go against the grain and their perspectives are not sugared with flowery lies and deceit. So many do not take the time to challenge their own thinking and beliefs before they start criticizing. The corrupted ones amongst us, wearing jackets and ties, get much more respect from the public.
