BALSAM GHUT, Tortola, VI – Information reaching Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) is that an inmate at Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) in Balsam Ghut, Tortola, has refused to eat food offered to him by the prison and has been making demands to see elected officials.

This information was related to VINO by sources familiar with the situation at the state-run institution.

Bad food in Balsam Ghut?

According to the same source; however, the hunger strike came to an end when the male prisoner reportedly had food brought to him from outside of the facility.

The full details of the action by the inmate remain unclear.

It is our understanding that other prisoners continue to complain about the quality of food at the state-run penitentiary.

The management style of the prison head, St Lucia national Verne A. G. Garde, has also been under scrutiny. Efforts to reach Mr Garde were unsuccessful.

Our newsroom also reached out to the Minister who shares responsibility for the prison, Minister for Health and Social Development Hon Carvin Malone, (AL) for a comment; however, Hon Malone did not repond to our request.

Demands

Meanwhile, further information received is that the inmate who refused to eat food offered by the prison was making demands, including wanting to see elected officials as well as the Governor.

        Human rights
Call the penitentiary jail ,or a correctional facility
After incarceration one is no longer eligible for certain position even with qualifications because of the record that follows him/her after successfully completing the programme ( time served) why then where they in there if they cannot return into society as a normal and free man you now become a convicted felon??
        HOW CROOKED IS THAT!‼
Some go to jail for the simplest of things no trying to justify there wrong doing but repercussions for such actions can be dealt with less severely still sending the message rather than exposing those individuals to such harsh environment cause we all are a product of our environment

Let them eat cake! They're in Prison, not a social club. For their crimes they want steak and potatoes, when they should be getting swill. Who brought him food from outside? Now everybody want the same. Grub is all you get Bad Boys.

No sir, as a kid during summer sometimes I fixed myself bread and sugar & water, or white rice mixed with milk & sugar when mammy was at work. Considering what we eat today, those were probably some of the best meals I had in a long time (except the sugar of course)

Just mek the food available and if him naw waan cum get it, tha's his problem.

The 2nd and 6th district reps have them like celebrities so they have a darm right to make demands. These guys like they forgot they are in prison paying for their crime. That is what they choose so why complain now. Freedom is surely sweet.

Now every inmate in the prison will sit back and use that move to get what they want. He want to stave himself, let him stave. There are people out here that can hardly feed their family and a F...ing criminal get to demand out side food. So I guess when he don’t want to eat prison food all he have to do is play the system and get outside food on the tax payers dime. District 2 and 6 reps are responsible for this.It is time for that Prison Warden to go. As much as I don’t care for criminals, I would not blame them for making the same demands. I’m not eating the prison food so go get me outside food.

What's wrong with his request.? What's wrong with prison authority organizing for an elected official up and meet. Not with just him but who ever wishes to have a chat the elected official.. Make it 7 minutes limit for those want to speak. .. As a matter afact I think it will be a good idea to have an Annual visit date set for an elected member to visit and listen... In this case they know this is when your elected member will come so you will have to wait until then....

So they give into a damn criminal using the system. That M F””””er would have eaten grass from the yard or Toilet S””it if he was under my watch. It is time for that INEPT man that Myron put in charge at the prison be released from his CONTRACT. Now other inmates is going to do the same. You don’t bargain or give into to inmates.

Thank you little man from District 2. Look at what you start to set in motion. When the inmates start the riot up in that prison please take the District 2 leader and put his A:: right in the middle of the riot and let them whip his A:: good. You make your bed, you lay in it. Maybe the outside food came from the District 2 little man since he is a advocate for the criminals up in the prison. You are no better than those inmates District 2 rep.

That was so wrong and a bad example to set. Now every inmate is going to play the same game. That is what is going to start the riot up on the hill. Take his behind and put a damn feeding tube in his A”” if he refuse to eat. THAT MAN THAT IS RUNNING THE PRISON HAS TO GO. Mitch, I will see you next election at the end of the strip.

Prison system is on the verge of a major collapse. If the little B**ch, yes B**ch in a man’s body don’t want to eat what the State and tax payers is feeding him, then &**k him. Bet if it was a Local boy, they would have let him starve to death nor would they have got him outside food to appease.

From what I see Balo is like a hotel.. at times these inmates eat better than some of us.. and they will try to abuse the system given a chance. Some of our prison officers are too lenient with them and yes even befriending some of them.. they need to separate personal from the professional.. these people are in prison for a reason.. yes they are humans but they gave up some of their rights when they chose to live outside of the Law..he will be on his own choosing to go on a hunger strike.. when “gas” take his body he’ll be more than glad to eat.. That prison needs to be run as a prison and not a social club.. that system is just too lenient with them.. and some of those prison officers as well are contributors to the behavior of some of these rude and disrespectful inmates for they permit the behaviors..that whole place need an overhaul!
These inmates are allowed to behave how they want.. stricter policies and procedures need to be in place and enforced by these officers.. a set of play traps!

I see families in the supermarket buying all kinds of food for their relatives in prison. Why are they allowed to bring separate food in? I know of prisons in this world where prisoners scramble to get their rations of bread and water, because they would starve to death if they didn't eat it, and their bodies would be taken out and dumped in a hole...THE END!
