ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Hundreds came out to witness a unique event on Thursday October 10, 2013 when the FIFA World Cup arrived in the Virgin Islands as part of a worldwide promotional campaign ahead of the World Cup Finals, which will be staged in Rio de Janiero, Brazil in 2014.

Even though the personalised airplane may have been too big to land at Beef Island yesterday, the actual world cup finally arrived at the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex to a tumultuous welcome from children who play in the BVI Football Association's Primary School league as well as specially invited guests and members of the government, including Premier Dr the Honourable D. Orlando Smith and Governor William Boyd McCleary.

The trophy itself, standing just 18 inches tall and made of 18 carat gold and worth over 20 million dollars according to some estimates but described as priceless by many others, was unveiled after remarks by Premier Smith and Governor McCleary. The pair was also presented with a small scale replica.

Earlier, various youngsters gave a soccer demonstration led by new BVIFA Technical Director, Mr Keith Griffith and there was also some traditional dancing by young girls and boys from primary school as well as a superb rendition of the territorial song by Tamisha Georges.

The event, sponsored by Road Town Wholesale and Coca Cola, was a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the World Cup trophy up close and personal and as BVIFA President Andy Bickerton mentioned, hopefully it will inspire a generation  of youth to want to represent the BVI and lift the trophy at a World Cup final.

Shane Henry new addition to BVIFA Executive

In other football news, the BVIFA AGM held on Wednesday October 9, 2013 at the BVI HQ saw Mr Shane Henry voted on to the Executive to fill the vacancy left by Vouga Brown.

The winners cheques from the 2012/13 competitions were also handed out and Mr Bickerton was pleased to mention the success of the Scholarship Programme, especially in light of how well Chris Telemaque is doing at his new College, Bethany, in Kansas.

Trevor Peters has also changed to a new institution, Tabor College, and is fighting his way into first team recognition

Bickerton also spoke of the success enjoyed by the Primary School League with over 770 registered boys and girls taking part, but cautioned that some of the players are falling through the cracks when it comes to the High School League.

To rectify that, he announced the appointment of Mr Keith Griffith to the post of Technical Director, a FIFA mandated position for all Associations, with special focus on the High School development.

He also noted that the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) was now holding a bi-annual competition for U-15’s and that the BVI would field a team by 2015.

Why do you need answers? What does it have to do with you? I can tell you for a start that $250k does not go very far when you have to pay for travel and accomodation for teams playing overseas. For admin costs and employing a staff member. If you are interested, join a club and come to the FA meetings, all is disclosed there.

Beautiful rendition of the song by miss George's. I call on the English teachers in the territory to enlighten me on some aspects of the song. Is it correct to have the song written in both first person and second person. If we are singing about our beautiful VI shouldn't it be like oh how radiant are our daughters and how wealthy are our sons. Our beaches boast their beauty and our success is second......
It is our song so we should be lauding OUR stuff. PLZ SHED SOME LIGHT

Why dont yall talk the truth. the event was poorly organised. The sound system was garbage you could barely understand what the hell the people were saying cuz RTW apparently didnt want to hire P...e. It was invitation only and most of the stands were empty. Why would they not open such an event to the public and motivate other kids other than soccer players? If I was asked to rate the event I would give it a 1.5

They asked the kids to come at 11:30 but did not start anything until 2. Then they had so many speeches and junk that our group never got to see the trophe becouse we had to get everyone back to school for pick up. It is sad that it was it was an great thing put will only be remembered for being long boring.
