ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Virgin Islands House of Assembly (HoA), which has its lowest rating since the 2011 General Elections, is to come off its summer break and meet on Thursday September 22, 2016.

While the media has not been officially informed, it will be the First Sitting of the Second Session of the Third House of Assembly.

It was just Friday July 22, 2016 that Governor John S. Duncan OBE issued a proclamation to prorogue the legislative body.

At the upcoming September 22, 2016 sitting, the United Kingdom appointed Governor is expected to read the Speech from the Throne. This is a Westminster style of Government tradition where the Monarch will present what the Sitting Government plans to do in terms of Legislation.

Over the years, from both Virgin Islands Party and even more so with the National Democratic Party (NDP) Governments, the Throne Speech has turned out to be a cut and paste presentation with little or no legislative accomplishments, but long on promises.

Walwyn lowers standards of HoA

Following the 2011 General Elections that saw the NDP come to power, the public has been bitterly turned off by the HOA proceedings. The controversial Minister for Education and Culture Hon Myron V. Walwyn, whose own legitimacy to be in the HoA is still an issue, has been accused of using the body to go after citizens he does not like, businesses he wants to see fail, and even insult and disrespect members of the Opposition.

One vocal NDP supporter, former Legislator and Government Minister Elieene L. Parsons OBE has described the body as a "circus", and claimed that people are not tuning in anymore because of the behaviour of some Members.

The HoA will be carried live on CBN Television Channel 51 on September 22, 2016 from its Chambers in Road Town from 10:00AM.
