ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Popular talk show “Honestly Speaking” came under scrutiny by members of the local press corps regarding its apparent ‘party slant’ favouring the Virgin Islands Party (VIP), a notion that was strongly rebuffed by host, Mr Claude O. Skelton Cline and VIP Chairman, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1).

At a VIP press conference on Saturday, December 1, 2018, Mr Skelton-Cline was confronted on whether “Honestly Speaking” is a VIP slanted one, to which he responded emphatically, “absolutely not.”

He instead proffered, “I suspect and they have been invited, I suspect persons are cautious about coming on my programme because they know full well, they would be on the receiving end of thoughtful and provocative questions, that they would not be allowed to get off the hook with superficial and shallow answers and hence you do have to think twice when you agree to come on Honestly Speaking.”

Substantive

He assured, the programme is designed to be one of content, to be substantive both to inspire and to inform.

Asked whether he had been less lenient and critical of the VIP, as against the governing National Democratic Party (NDP), VIP Chairman, Hon Fahie, jumped to the defence stating, “If you are going to slant his show as VIP slash Honestly Speaking, there are a lot of other radio show now and especially in the past that we could have slashed NDP slash whatever they had named.”

He suggested that, “a matter of fact, some of those (NDP slanted) talk show helped put the VIP in the opposition with a lot of misinformation…So they have a hand in a lot of misinformation and they are still walking around here and those have to be cleared up because one of the things the VIP is going to do is we are going to look to the future.”

Meanwhile Skelton-Cline did not hold back his personal political affiliation and made no bones of saying, he is confident that there is no other choice other than the VIP in terms of party that has what it takes to lead the Territory and has committed to sticking with the party.

“What we are saying, no matter what has been your party affiliation we cannot reward failure and the NDP government has failed the people of these Virgin Islands, they have betrayed the trust they have breached the contract.”

Like Calypso, the Honestly Speaking talk show, as well as others, is a social, political, economical and cultural commentary. CSC has a right to his own political views as any other resident has to his/hers. The Honestly Speaking talk show should be judged fairly by the actions of its host. Too often, we passed judgement based on personal bias, political persuasion, fourth hand info, rumour, innuendo, melee...etc. Currently, Honestly Speaking is the hottest talk show in the territory. However, its sustained success or premature failure will be based on the action(s) of the host and the public receptivity. If it meets public demand and expectations, it will have a long life and if no, it will sink like a lead balloon.
