Hon Vanterpool questions security detail of Premier Fahie
Threats of assassination
During the Thursday, April 25, 2019 Second Sitting of the First Session of the Fourth House of Assembly (HoA), Hon Fahie dropped the bombshell news that there had been three major threats of assassination against him, hence the reason for personal bodyguards.
Further, Premier Fahie said at the same sitting, “We have sat down with the Commissioner of Police, we have sat down with private security… and we have made sure that the security that is needed, that will happen as the Premier of this Territory,” he implored.
Citing the subject as a ‘National Security’ matter, he revealed that Commissioner of Police, Michael B. Matthews of the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF), has been on the case while noting that given the situation, personal security was necessary, hence the reason for his bodyguards.
Stepping out of the House of Assembly where the Fifth Sitting of the First Session of The Fourth HoA is taking place today, July 16, 2019, Hon Vanterpool, peeved that he was not allowed to address the HoA shortly after his swearing in, began to address a few of his supporters and media operatives in the compound of the HoA, saying “this yard and this House is where freedom of speech must be allowed, and today I am not afraid to speak to the people,” Hon Vanterpool said, as he proceeded to make statements outside of the protection of immunity in the HoA.
Security detail costing millions- Hon Vanterpool
Apologising to the people for the “turn of events due to my misjudgement early in March of this year,” Hon Vanterpool said he wished to join his Opposition colleagues to hold the Government accountable in the House of Assembly.
And one of the top issues on his agenda is to find out why Hon Fahie is the first Premier in the Territory to “attract a full-time security detail.”
“Why is this security detail costing us tax payers millions of dollars and why is this security detail that we have for Honourable Andrew Fahie, the man himself, and not for the position, the Office of the Premier?”
According to Hon Vanterpool, the questions will be asked whether the Acting Premier, when he is premier, have the same security and if he the Acting Premier is not receiving the same security why is it costing tax payers over 5 million in security to Honourable Fahie over the next four years.
We need Scotland Yard detectives to investigate
“We heard the premier talk about threats to this life, and if that is so that is a very unfortunate thing and I condemn those threats to his life if that is so, but Mr Speaker, I want to tell him why have we not heard confirmation of threats from the Commissioner of Police? Where is the Commissioner of Police on these threats? The people must know.”
Hon Vanterpool reasoned that if there is a threat on one’s life, especially a threat on the Premier, there should be a need to order a full investigation into the threat.
“We needed to have Scotland Yard detectives here a long time ago. Find out why our Premier is under threat.”
Hon Vanterpool claimed that he learnt recently, the Commissioner of Police has no idea of the threats to the Premier. “Up to know, four months later, the Commissioner of Police has no idea what this threat is. Yet the people of this territory has to pay millions of dollars on security for the Premier.”
"Yes, put it to them," shouted Lorie A. Rymer, an aggressive propagandist of the National Democratic Party (NDP) and anti- Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Government radio commentator.
Meanwhile, Hon Vanterpool said he wants to know if Hon Fahie is no longer premier who will pay the security cost or whether a bill will be passed in the HoA in this session that all premiers in the future will receive security for life.
Hon Vanterpool, who is infamous for the $40M over-run on the Cyril B. Romney Tortola Pier Park under his watch as Minister responsible for the project, says he personally is aware of investigations against Hon Fahie over alleged “financial improprieties”.
Several other allegations were made against Hon Fahie as well as against the Office of the Elections Supervisor.
Police Commissioner Mr Matthews, when asked whether he is aware of the threats of assassination against Hon Fahie and whether there is an ongoing investigation, told Virgin Islands News Online, “I cannot and will not make any comment regarding security or threats in relation to the Premier or any Minister of Government.”
