TREASURE ISLE HOTEL, Tortola, VI – Political newcomer and second term legislator, Honourable Myron V. Walywn (AL), has been elected the new Leader of the National Democratic Party (NDP), beating out the party’s co-founder, Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton.

He was elected the party’s second leader, during the NDP’s 2018 Convention and internal elections, held today Saturday, June 23, 2018, at the Treasure Isle Hotel.

Virgin Islands News Online has since confirmed that Hon Walywn won the election, securing 68 votes, as against the 51, that voted for Honourable Skelton. (Virgin Islands News Online, has in recent weeks, accurately reported Hon Walywn as the front runner for the the NDP post).

Hon Walwyn will now lead the NDP into the Virgin Islands next General Elections—constitutionally due by 2019—since the party’s founder leader, Dr the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, did not seek another term as NDP President.

He served as the party’s President since its formation in January 1998.

Penn new Deputy

The NDP second highest office was won by Honourable Marlon A. Penn (R8) having won 69 of the delegates’ votes. Honourable Melvin M. Turnbull (R2), his challenger, secured 50 votes.

With the NDP contest over, eyes will now turn to the Opposition Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Congress meeting schedule for July 2018 where they are to select some twelve candidates to run with party boss Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1).

NDP election history

The NDP first contested the Virgin Islands’ General Elections, in 1999 and secured five seats in the then Legislative Counsel, making up the Territory’s then political opposition.

In 2003, the NDP won government taking eight seats in Legislative Council, defeating the Virgin Islands Party (VIP). Dr Smith was the Chief Minister.

In 2007, the VIP cleaned House with the NDP losing ground and coming out with only two of the 13 seats.

Some say, had there been a recount, Dr Smith himself would have been defeated.

The party rebounded in 2011 however and captured nine seats and then in the 2015 snap elections, the NDP won again taking 11 seats.

Dr Smith has led the party into 5 consecutive elections 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015.

The public schools holding fund raisers to rebuild! Who and who have our children in tents still? Since that’s the way ya’ll thinking, no wonder he’s President now. Dumb people. We’re too rich to accept help from the UK military, yet most of any buildings that are government run or owned still in shambles come next hurricane season. To all the government employees in the complex, if a hurricane come this season, you will be in ⛺️s too

@silly rabbit , What Irma and Maria, The storm was in September.Look around you lots of people with less resources and money have rebuilt since the storm. The schools are not a priority with NDP. Nearly every time they bragged about how much is put in the reserve funds. The purpose of the reserve fund is for situations like Irma.

He wants to be able to fail the WHOLE country and not just our kids. What a joke! You know who we need running for office... It’s quite interesting to see all the negative comments here about Hon. Myron V. Walwyn and the doom and gloom being predicted and wished upon the BVI. Is that all really necessary and called for?

The delegates made their choice and elected him as leader of the NDP and it’s up to the general populace to decide whether to elect the NDP or the VIP to lead the BVI forward. And come what may, the very few that come on to the news blogging sites to voice their views will not make any difference come what may!

We have to realise that all the noise that is being made is just that - noise. Hon. Walwyn, as it has been seen, does not pay attention to the noice, he gets on with the job he was elected to do whether his decisions be popular or not. That to some is the sign of a true leader!

Just like the cartoon says, the delegate list was rigged.Doc is celebrating.I guess he wanted to prove that, contrary to what is portrayed in the cartoons,he is not asleep. He probably wanted to get revenge for the young man’s disrespect in the house, but revenge is not always sweet Doc,Let me see you all get your party elected in the next general elections.

It's a new season it's a brand new day fresh fuel to charter our way. Embrace the new era and trust me it's going to be challenging but we can make it if we stay focus with our eyes on the prize. Country above self is the key to success.

@ Fresh: It is really a new season and a new day indeed! There is nothing to embrace for this new era is full of deception and will lead this country down a path where we should not be going. For someone who boasts of being the face of young people, to use deceptive tactic to win an internal election is not a good example for young people. Promises of contract, giving out money and promises of money, spreading lies on other persons is down right mean and dirty. Using such tactics does not give a clear view of voters choice - people felt obligated because of what they were promised and given. What legacy are we leaving for our young people? Is this a good start? How can person speak of integrity and transparency when you are guilty of the same? And there is much more that can be said but it will come later. This is not the leadership this country needs and the people will not be fooled! The battle is won but the war is behind. A celebration party which was held at Mulligan on the same night of the election. I hope the celebration will continue. People were disgusted by what they saw.
