Hon Maduro-Caines declines debate in D6

- Says “I am too busy campaigning and don’t have time.”

BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI – Even after National Democratic Party (NDP 1) leader, Hon Myron V. Walwyn (AL) had welcomed and called for debates in his 2019 New Year’s Message, one member of his camp is now defying those words and refusing to participate in an upcoming debate in District Six.

Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines—the current NDP District Six Representative—has declined to participate in a debate organised by a group of residents in District Six, even as competing candidate, Mr John M. Samuel of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) has confirmed his participation.

Too busy to debate - Maduro-Caines

According to sources, letters were being prepared and phone calls made to each of the two candidates when Mr Samuel agreed to the debate.

However, sources told our news desk that in a phone call to Hon Maduro-Caines from two committee members, she responded, “I am too busy campaigning and don’t have time to debate.”

Our news centre reached out today, Sunday, January 13, 2019, to Hon. Maduro-Caines, however, she did not immediately respond.

It is still unclear, the reason why Hon Madruo-Caines will not participate in the debate against VIP candidate Mr Samuel, but persons familiar with the issue will wait to see whether NDP leader Mr Walwyn will push his candidate to enter.

VIP took Virgin Gorda

The first debate for the political season was held on January 9, 2019, on Virgin Gorda.

It was between three candidates, the current 9th District Representative, Dr the Honourable Hubert R. O’Neal of the ruling NDP 1, Jose C. B. de Castro representing the breakaway group, Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM-NDP2) and Vincent O. Wheatley representing VIP.

After the debate, 70 per cent of residents on social media listening and watching said that Mr Wheatley won hands down.

Coming in second with 20 per cent was PVIM’s Mr de Castro and third with 10 per cent of the votes, incumbent Hon O’Neal.

Ok maybe I missed something or she went to a different school than the rest of us. Isn’t a debate also part of the campaign process????

Wait, wasn't her boss demanding debates. What is this now? Plus as incumbent for the past 8 years Maduro shouldn't have to do a lot of campaigning. She should be able to stand on her record. Really Really bad excuse.

Mr Minister Of MisEducation and Misdirection calling for something that he nor his team is ready for... set of power hungry no- gooders. I get along with some but can’t support that which worships or works under the umbrella of such a disingenuous man who claims to care about the youth but actions prove far from the truth
    Debate me
    You’ll see

Leave the debates for the party leaders. We all know that the district reps don't have a sizable allocation to execute most of the projects they have on their wish list.

Lets get Andrew, Fraser, Ronnie and Myron on the stage and settle this once and for all. No pre-released questions no scripted answered. What will your leader do when he gets that call at 3am? Let's Go!

Who setting up the debate? One of Myron followers so they can give him the questions?

Scared to look foolish I guess. Smh. Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t myron challenge the leaders to a debate? Now he’s saying debates don’t tell you about the candidates!! Guess NDP got embarrassed by the poor showing of Hubert and didn’t want the rest of their team to get exposed or embarrassed.

Her leader was advocating for debates however; it is her right to choose to participate or not. Debates can be used as forum where she can also campaign on broader scale and let us the voting population know what is her plans for the district. This time around I am not voting party but looking at each individual and casting my votes.

No surprise by her decision not to debate. Clearly she either knows or has heard about John's intellect which, quite frankly, is clearly far superior.

I don’t see anything wrong with what she said. If she busy, she busy just make sure you the voting members of district six find time (no scratch that) go to the polls and use all the time you need to vote her out. This goes for all voters throughout the territory to. Show them we mean business.

A debate does not mean because a person win that mean he can ran a country someone can win hands down and does not know from head to toe how to teach a class

    Dear Alvera,

What do you call busy campaigning? Visiting peoples homes and sitting and gossiping about John along with being childish on Facebook.

You need to grow up and you need to stop.

She should debate. If her seat is sure then she does not need to campaign that much so she should have free time to debate. Anybody that is afraid of a debate in this election is suspect and the voters should be concerned.

We need debate between Andrew and Myron first. If they’re not prepared to do that don’t do this.
    • @observer (14/01/2019, 15:34) Like (2) Dislike (0) Reply
They all should accept invitations to debate once the debate is set up by an independent process similar to that in VG. To think you can excuse yourself from a debate called by the people is crazy.

Alvera you need to have the debate. We the voters need to know what your plans are. We don't have time to come and listen to NPD lies but a one and one with you and John is needed. We demand same!!! You fail us for 8 years don't fail us for the debate.

No respect. Why harrass the lady on a Sunday when she already declined. The minister of the 1st district need to stop with this strategy trying to win districts.

Let them all go out and campaign and stop trying to take people ideas. Go have your VIP rally and let us hear them all speak for themselves.

We want a Chairman debate first. Leave the districts alone.

It is not her right. NDP shame now as they will all be exposed like Bertie. I understand why Alvera may not want to debate but she should for her own reputation and to kill all this issue now.

As a constituent of District 6, I find it offensive that our district Rep cannot find time to debate issues and concerns of the district. These are not John’s or the organizer’s concerns alone but our concerns. Her strategy is that everybody telling her that her seat is sure so why risk debating John who is supposedly behind? It’s obviously not her strong suit based on her performances in the HOA over the years so why risk it?

I advise not to take us for granted.

Please leave the lady alone she does not have to debate all the things she plan to do for her district she can outline them on the campaign trail.

Alvera have the right to decline. She went wrong when she said it was because of campaigning when the debate is a campaign platform. So now... it looks like she's running.

Lol Alvera is sticking to her strengths. There is no need to embarrass yourself in a debate when all you need to win the election is popularity. Myron need people like her who are willing to say yes for everything without question and don’t add anything to government besides a guaranteed vote.
