ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Even though Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines (R6) and the rest of the Opposition were AWOL for the passing of the Immigration and Passport (Amendment) Act 2019, in the Virgin Islands (VI) House of Assembly (HoA), the Sixth District representative moved to debunk claims that she is not an ‘Expat hater’ as is being circulated via a list on social media.

Hon Maduro-Caines made the revelations at Monday’s June 3, 2019, Fourth Sitting of the First Session of the Fourth House of Assembly (HoA), where she noted that she has been married to an expat for over 15 years and as such, cannot be a hater.

Expat Hater List

The Sixth District representative, in raising points on the controversial, ‘Clear path to regularisation: Residency and Belonger Status Programme,’ led by Premier and Minister of Finance Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1), appeared hurt by the ‘Expat Hater’ label, causing her to share some very personal information with the HoA.

“I was sent a What’s App this morning, with a list of expat haters’ name, and to my surprise, I Alvera Maduro-Caines, whose mother was from St. Kitts, whose husband is from Nevis, whose two children’s father is from St Vincent and whose grandfather was from Curaçao, is now being labelled an expat hater by some of us,” she said.

Hon Maduro-Caines continued, “But I know for the people who know me, know who I am. I didn’t realise I was married to somebody over 15 years that I hated cause he’s an Expat.”

Hon Maduro-Caines in breaking her silence on the government's ‘Fast Track’ initiative had said the government should ‘Put the immigration issue to rest for a while’ and prioritised 'born here' children and immigration backlog first.

She made those recommendations at a Thursday, May 30, 2019, Opposition meeting at East End/Long Look Community Centre where the opposition had labelled the Hon Fahie led 3-month old administration as a ‘dictatorship’ that do not consult with neither the Opposition nor the people.

Bill Sowing Discord - Maduro-Caines

Meanwhile, in a media statement yesterday, June 4, 2019, Ms Maduro-Caines in explaining why she did not vote on the Immigration and Passport (Amendment) Act 2019 Bill said, “No I did not vote, we actually left the sitting… all of the Opposition Members. This to me was not an issue even to bring to the House let alone to be voted on, this was something that could have been done internally which I stated when I made my debate.”

“I am wondering why it even came to the House, I am of the opinion that it came to the House to sow discord among the people and among the Opposition Members,” she further said.

In Monday’s HoA, Hon Maduro-Caines implored, “I could call many persons from different islands who would stand here with me and say yes, Alvera Maduro-Caines has helped them somewhere, somehow in gaining status in this country.”

According to the VI constitution if a grand child of a born belonger is born in santo domingo, that grand child can claim belonger rights in bvi, so what is the real significance of being born in bvi [ah barn heer] when a child born outside the bvi can just appear and claim bvi rights, here in bvi and return to santo domingo the next day [ the same rights with ah barn heer] but a child born in bvi from expat parents does not have rights in bvi, until age 18 when that child is allowed to apply to become a citzen or belonger[that expat child born in bvi can be deported at birth to the birth place of the expat mother and father] children born in or outside bvi get rights from parents not from the place of birth.
only USA give place of birth rights, thats why bvislanders born their children in USVI,PR and USA and the parents are not US citizens but the child is a US citizen.
For too long we focused on the term "ah barn heer" but we as citizens-belongers never took a closer read of the VI constitution,so we grow up in bvi talking with "ah barn heer" talk without a meaning.

Ms Caines making a lot of sense. Deal with Children born here and back log first... The kind of victimization and favouritism that go on in the System..Some People who just make 15 or 20,yrs will get status before someone who's been here for 35 yrs and get no response from their application.... Bias, hate, favouritism are real and exixt. Clear the daxxmxn back log first. That will be seen as a fair process... That's all Ms Caines is asking for. A fair process... She is not a hater..

That sounds like when the racist them say I got black friends. Alvera has always been known to vote for what she support even when it is bad for us like BVI Airways. The fact that she didn't vote speaks volumes. She just dont have the guts to say she against the expats getting status or even to say it like Eltie "I dont hate expats I just like my people more than you"

You are a Jackio. Nothing on that plane ever
Went to the house for voting. Shows clearly you don't know what goes on in the house. Plus, if it went to cabinet, she would not have been able to vote for she was a back bencher and they are not allowed in cabinet. Get your facts straight.. dumbo!
