ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The House of Assembly (HoA) of the Virgin Islands will be dissolved tomorrow, May 1, 2015, paving the way for elections to be held sometime in late May or June, 2015.

Premier of the Virgin Islands Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith made the announcement while speaking to ZBVI Radio today April 30, 2015.

According to the Virgin Islands Constitutional Order of 2007, a general election shall be held at such time within two months, but not earlier than twenty-one days after every dissolution of the House of Assembly, as the Governor shall appoint by proclamation published in the Gazette.

The Virgin Islands Party (VIP) was anticipating general elections to be called in early July but this will be sooner with today's announcement.

"According to the Constitution, once the House is dissolved the elections must be held within 60 days but it cannot be held 21 days before the House is dissolved. So between 21-days and 60 days the elections must be held....It looks more to me like May-June elections," Premier Smith said.

Government Information Service (GIS) subsequently released a brief statement from the Premier that read:

"My Fellow Virgin Islanders:

In accordance with Section 84 (2) of the Virgin Islands Constitution Order 2007, I have today asked His Excellency the Governor to dissolve the House of Assembly on Friday 1st May, 2015 to allow for the holding of a General Election in accordance with Section 86 of the said Constitution Order."

Major speech on Monday

While delivering opening remarks at the celebration event for the expanded cruise ship pier on April 29, 2015 Premier Smith said he was going to make a major speech on Monday May 4, 2015.

"In a few days, in fact on Monday, I will make a major speech about where we are progressing and moving towards," he said.

"And where we are and from whence we came. And giving the picture for tomorrow. Residents and people of the BVI are pleased with where we are today, aren't you?" He asked as he ended his speech.

Persons on the ground were murmuring to each other whether the speech could be to announce an elections date, which some believe could be as early as July 2015.

It's best if he took the land because he will not see where Mark turn in the 4th District, another landslide for the action man. Lower Estate young boys and long bush family cannot win Sprauve an election.

So the improvements of our facilities and the cruise pier are tactics to fool people? and i guess thats "sufferation" for the people huh......Imagine we were able to restore confidence in the banks and the European Union and England with borrowing money and you are talking about we have to survive before another election?
      • @rr (01/05/2015, 06:50) Like (5) Dislike (1) Reply
I know you have your own view and support whoever candidates/party, but most or all of the schools' infrastructure and others are in really bad shape. For e.g. have you seen the Bregado Flax school lately? The reality is if the NDP restored confidence in the Banks and England with borrowing, why the hell monies aren't trickling down to us that are really struggling and I don't want to hear personal handouts cause I don't need one. I am so sick of hearing people praise about a half done cruise pier expansion with cost overruns or the Hospital which by the way is not fully functional was to cost us 64 Million Dollars but instead it is over 100 Millions and still begging for money but because Election is near, we have big dedication ceremonies and fireworks just to say PROGRESS. You people just freaking irritating man.

The Primier thinks that he is going to outsmart the voters but he might get a surprise. Only those looking for hand. Out cannot see what is happening. There is so much corruption in this little territory that only God can save us now. Always remember it was not his government ,s idea to extend the cruise pier. They ran with it after gaining power for their own gain. We want to know what is going on at the port. AccountiAbility is important. Who puts rat to watch cheese? How come the same rep for theNDP not running for the second again? Pay at the port must be sweeter. All will come to light one day.

We will see if the people will do like the people of Dominica to vote for the incumbent or there will be a wind of change like st márteen,st kitts nevis,Anguilla and Guyana in the next few days. People let us not make the politicians feel too comfortable either 1 or 2 terms and no more. When we feel they don't worth it we vote them out. I still feel we need a change

Seems like the sitting party believes itself to be indispensable, irreplaceable. Those politicians will better remember to take serious, the old saying, MAN PROPOSES, GOD DISPOSES. May the hand of each and every voter, with one stroke, dismiss each and every one of you!

Elections are serious business; the livelihoods of people are at stake. The BVIs have many problems and time should be allowed for thorough discussions, town hall meetings and debates.

In St. Kitts and Nevis, Team Unity campaigned for almost two (2) years, taking the time to educate the electorate of
what was happening in/to their country; traveled as far as Canada, the US, Anguilla/St. Martin and even to the Virgin Islands.

In the US, the most powerful country in the world, elections for president is held every four years, first week of
November; allowing some 18 months for citizens to listen to the issues and debates. Democracy at work.

Our election term is for four years. Who does it help to shorten the term and call the election?. Of course it benefits the ruling class, their the cronies and supporters; even the foreign investors; Jerecki, Branson, Johnson
    and the likes.

Elections matter and is not a hide and seek game and people's lives are affected. Snap elections are no laughing
    matter.

    Word of the Day? VIGILANT
