PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI- Retired nurse, Mrs Norma Benjamin’s Book; “Nursing In The Virgin Islands: A Historical Perspective (1920-2017)” is now housed at the Virgin Islands Collection room, located at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College’s Learning Resource Centre.

This is according to a press release which says that Students, as well as the general public, can now have access to this valuable resource, which depicts the historical challenges and successes of early Health care in the BVI.

The donation of 12 books was made possible by NAGICO Insurance BVI. According to Mrs Niasha Benjamin, “nursing is a very important aspect in our healthcare system, and we are delighted to be able to help educate the youth about its significance by donating these books to the College”.

NAGICO Insurance for many years has donated various educational books to Schools throughout the BVI, from primary to Tertiary levels.

When asked how she feels about having her book added to the College’s Virgin Islands Collection, Mrs Benjamin, a former esteemed nurse for over 33 years, was speechless at first. “I am overjoyed. History in the BVI can now be preserved”.

Benjamin reflected on the fact that early pioneers of BVI nursing have passed on without in-depth documentation of how things were done. “History is being lost, but I am honoured to be a part of helping to retain such.”
