HLSCC-Highland Spring College Race Series kicks off on Virgin Gorda

VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI- The Virgin Gorda leg of the 17th H. Lavity Stoutt Community College/Highland Spring Race Series got on its way this past Saturday September 22, 2012, with forty five strong travelling through the Valley.

It was a race of champions setting the pace. In the Men’s Open category defending and consecutive champion Emrol Amsterdam captured first place in a time of 12 minutes 01.87 seconds. Second was 2006-2007 overall champion Timon Robinson who has been absent for some time and third in race #1 was series veteran Curwin Andrews. For the women Lavern “Ebony” Fahie crossed the line first in a time of 17 minutes 55.14 seconds. Ebony the 2006-2008 overall female champion is certainly no stranger to the races as she has been participating since she was in Primary school. Casey McNutt and Monique Joseph took the women’s second and third place spots respectively.

Defending champions Levons Leopards were nowhere in sight for race #1 allowing Steven’s Stallions with four strong to take the lead in the series while team Robinson O’Neal Memorial led by the 2011 Outstanding Primary Male Athlete Leonard Lewis took second. In the secondary division defending champions Harrigan (House 2) took the early lead with O’Neal and Rhymer houses close behind.

Race director Stephanie Russ Penn expressed that, “it is exciting to that start in Virgin Gorda continues to be strong in number of participants.” She added that, “she was also very encouraged by significant participation of the HLSCC students and that of the members of the Raw Skillz Track and Field Club.” Raw Skillz is a newly formed club and the second of such clubs in Virgin Gorda next to the Road Runners Club.

Race #2 in Virgin Gorda is scheduled for October 6, while the HLSCC/Highland Spring races return to the Paraquita Bay campus next Saturday September 29, 2012. Registration is at 6:30 a.m. and the race starts at 7:00 a.m. For further information regarding the series please contact Ms. Russ Penn, 852-7216.
