CAPPOON’S BAY, Tortola, VI- Leader of the Opposition and First District Representative Hon Andrew A. Fahie has praised the late Chief Minister H. Lavity Stoutt as a great leader who knew to shake off the negatives thrown at him and used them to step up on and into his purpose.

Hon Fahie was speaking at the 17th Annual H. Lavity Stoutt Memorial Celebration and Wreath Laying Ceremony at Cappoon’s Bay Burial Grounds on Monday March 6, 2017.

The Opposition Leader and Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Chairman, Hon Fahie, started his remarks by saying that one of the things that distinguishes a successful person from one that is a failure is that the successful person got up one more time than when they were knocked down and that a successful person understands that once you live long enough you will experience both success and failure.

“Of course, great leaders would make mistakes but they do not let those challenging times make them bitter but rather they use those experiences to make them better. Great leaders do not let the few that try to keep them tied to the past have dominance over the many that are trying to help thrust them into their bright future. Great leaders shake off the negatives and use them to step up on and into their purpose.”

According to Hon Fahie, it is clear that the late but great H. Lavity Stoutt was a great leader that “knew how to shake off the negatives and use them to step up on and into his purpose. The late but great H.L. Stoutt stayed true to his purpose and his purpose stayed true to him. In doing such, this allowed him to live a successful life, simply because he fulfilled the purpose for which he was created to do.”

Rename Drake’s Highway after H.L. Stoutt

Meanwhile, Hon Fahie said the Virgin Islands is a better place today due to the many positive contributions of the late but great H.L. Stoutt. “He was a true and loving family man. He was a community man and the First District Representative for many years. He loved people. Honourable Stoutt was the Territory’s First Chief Minister, the first Chairman of the Virgin Islands Party and the founding father for the Virgin Islands Party. He was a man that loved his country.  His faith in GOD along with his love for people is what thrust him into great things.”

The First District Representative said the H.L. Stoutt Community College was Hon Stoutt’s “baby that he birthed with assistance from many. Today H.L. Stoutt Community College continues to touch everyone in a positive way.”

Reiterating what he has said in the past, Hon Fahie said it remains his humble opinion that Drake’s Highway should soon be renamed H.L. Stoutt Highway.

This accomplishment (Drake’s Highway), according to Hon Fahie, continues to impact everyone in a positive way. “This is yet another one of the late but great H.L. Stoutt’s accomplishments. The list of his great accomplishments is endless.”

“Today’s generation can safely say thank you to H. L. Stoutt for allowing God to use him so that future generations can benefit from the fruits of his labor.”

H.L Stoutt knew to shake off the dirt!

Sharing the story about a donkey that was thrown into a deep dried well, Hon Fahie said dirt was thrown on the donkey in the well; however, every shovel of dirt thrown down on the donkey, he had to shake it off and step up on it. Eventually he used what was meant to bury him to step up and out from the pit into the palace.

“H. L. Stoutt’s greatness came as a result of knowing how to shake off the dirt thrown on him and use it to step up into his purpose thereby into the palace of greatness. He went from the pit to the palace of greatness. Likewise, each of us must also shake off the different struggles of life and use them to step up into our purpose so that we can reside in the palace of greatness.”

Hon Fahie also urged persons to allow God to use them like H.L. Stoutt did so that they can live a life that truly honours and reflects the life and legacy of “our true freedom fighter, the late but great Honourable Hamilton Lavity Stoutt.”

The event was attended by a number of persons, including Premier Dr The Hon D. Orlando Smith (AL) and other members of Government.

NOW NOW NOW, Why is the BVI the only country in the world to have an annual Wreath Laying Ceremony for a head of state. John F. Kennedy, Winston Church Hill, Cyril King are remembered for their good work with no fan fare. Yes a holiday but this annual Wreath laying is totally out of proportion and unnecessary. It is ironic that many who religiously attend these ceremonies give no thought about attending a Church service on Good Friday or Easter Sunday. How pathetic.
