ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Known for not being shy to speak his mind, the Bishop of the New Life Baptist Church in Duff’s Bottom on the main island of Tortola, John I. Cline, has taken on the media.

The ‘man of the cloth’ and businessman was speaking in a live interview on the International Morning Ride Show on ZROD 103.7 FM with host Paul ‘Gadiethz’ Peart on January 6, 2017.

When asked if he agrees with a friend of the host that the media at times put out misleading headlines, the fiery religious leader said “I am one hundred percent in agreement with your friend in terms of that, because what I find that the media does is they create headlines to drive blogs and sensations, not realising that the world is reading these headlines.”

Police yourself or else- John I Cline

In his continued attack on the media, the political activist went on to state that many of the media headlines are “misleading and seem sometimes inflammatory…it’s just not responsible.”

He warned the media houses to “police themselves before they are policed in some legislative way.”

Bishop Cline, who also ran for elective office in the 2003 Virgin Islands (VI) general elections as an independent candidate and was unsuccessful, coming in 10th out of 13 candidates, as only the top 4 get a seat in the 13 member Parliament, recalled calling up a media house to correct them about an article on health care that he claimed was “very misleading.”

The Virgin Islander said the media “needs to be more responsible and not try to create the news and just report the news.”

VI History of recent media attacks

Mr Cline is not the first to attack the media as the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) Government of Premier and Minister of Information Dr The Honourable D. Orlando Smith has spent most of its time bashing the media.

The climax of the NDP hostility to press freedom was when in 2014 they passed a controversial Misuse and Cybercrime Act with provisions to put journalists in jail and levy huge fines on media houses for publishing leaked information.

The Bill was condemned locally, regionally and internationally. One of the biggest voices against the VI media censor bill was the International Press Institute, a lobbying group that fights to maintain freedom of the press and democratic governance worldwide.

Never have noting to say about God or spreading the word. Always some propoganda and publicity stunt, looking attention. Your day is on Sunday at the church, stay out the news, with your nonsense all the time. It's disgusting!

The man was asked a question and gave an answer to the question. The thing is right. The media houses in the BVI are very irresponsible and misleading at times with the headlines theyproduce.

without them you would not get any news, the majority party would get away with more than they are now,
and we wouldn't know to ask about where our money is going. Press is important.
Not all are irresponsible. We need them!!

Bishop is being hypocritical. Media has a responsibility and does its thing. Active and lively headlines whether it print media or electronic media attracts and captivates audience. Church does its things. Exciting and fiery pastors attracts and keep worshipers. Government does its things. Double speaking and make believe. But regardless of how they do it, they must communicate truth. Is not the Bishop one of the biggest narcissistic, media who....s? If you hate the media that off radio, TV....... etc.

‘man of the cloth’? Please. Which cloth? Every time I here or see this guy, I think of those prosperity pastors on TV who are pimping their congregations in the name of God. Scratch their surfaces, and the dirt is readily exposed.

Apparently, he does not believe in freedom of the press. He is all over the map for a ‘man of the cloth’, and always has something to say. Give me a break. Consider the source.

Doesn't he has a church to attend to? Oh..I forget. He is busy sucking on the government's nipple.

Is John Cline saying that bloggers are mindless ignoramuses who are easily led off the cliff like a herd of sheep? At least, the mindless idiots had enough sense not to vote for his media hogging @$$ in the 2003 election. The kettle calling the pot black. He is the biggest media w***e and narcissist who is fond of creating controversies for media play. Is not it funny that he dislikes the media and want to scuttle freedom of the press but wants to use the media for self interest. Perhaps the media should just ignore him. What does John have to say about some late night prosperity gospel preachers and false hope peddlers?Does birds of a feather flock together? Take a seat or two. What does John have to say about conflict of interest at BVIHSA? If Doc was not so soft he would have kick his no credibility @$$ to curb long ago.

The pastor does not seek out publicity. The news media keeps him relevant as they always call him for a comment or interview and when he gives them one interview, they make ten stories out of it. Speak what you know. But I applaud him for his interest in this country and he should continue to keep the foot of the Government to the fire!

It's what media houses do all over the world not just here. They create headlines for readers to gravitate to reading post haste. BUT, regardless the people ain't BLIND or DEAF. Some put things in their own perspective yes, some of us level of understanding differ but ALL AIN'T IDIOTS, ALL DIDN'T GO TO SCHOOL ON WEEKENDS and ALL DIDN'T JUST EAT THEIR LUNCH MONEY. Those of us who sat under the TARMOND (TAMARIND) TREE we did well for ourselves. COMMON SENSE RULE BISHOP. READING IS FUNDAMENTAL AND SO IS UNDERSTANDING.
