Guyanese Xmas treat – BVI/GT we linking
One thing that is customary among the Guyanese population in their home land is the Christmas tradition of sharing food with love ones, neighbours and friends.
It is something that they do not get to enjoy at its fullest being resident in another country but this year they took an opportunity to live this tradition in a different style. They celebrated ‘Xmas Cheers – BVI/GT we linkin’, an initiative of staff of the Virgin Islands News Online.
The idea was bought over by Caribbean Insurers Limited (CIL) and Digicel BVI. They along with other businesses in the VI owned and operated by Guyanese and some with Guyanese ties other than some of their staff afforded a wide range of Guyanese foods to be shared with all and sundry at a block party on December 12, 2014.
Many came out for the event and enjoyed the popular meals that are never missing from a Christmas table of Guyanese like the pepperpot, Guyanese blackcake, fruit and sponge cakes, fried rice, chowmein just to name a few.
All the food and drinks were shared free of cost to hundreds who came by.
There was also the popular cook up rice, a dish that Guyanese ensure is hot and done at the stroke of Midnight December 31. This goes with the old adage that the New Year must break you with food in the pot meaning that the family will always have food throughout the year.
The organizers were also very happy to see several leaders of the Territory coming out to share in the moment including Chairman of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) Honourable Julian Fraser RA, (R3), Managing Director of the BVI Ports Authority Mr Claude O. Skelton Cline among others.
The success of the event has resulted in the sponsors planning to make it even bigger come December 2015.
