A contingent of 42 Guyanese scouts is due to participate in the 15th Caribbean Scout Jamboree to be held later this month in Curacao, according to Assistant District Commissioner Theon Hope.

The nine leaders and 33 Explorer and Venture Scouts are due to depart Guyana on Sunday, July 20, 2014.

The next day, they will begin participating in the July 21 to 28 event to be held under the theme “Life Tracking Treasures."

The Caribbean Scout Jamboree is a periodic gathering for Scouts in the wider region and is being held at intervals since 1952.

Hope said the scouts would be given an opportunity to express themselves under different sub-themes- “Our Mind and Body,” “Our Family and Friends,” “Our Desires and Dreams,” “Our Happiness and Challenges,” “Our Intelligence” and “Our Nature.”

The Scouts will also be Showcasing Guyana’s Cultural Folklore amongst other things.

The last Caribbean Scout Jamboree was held in Guyana in 2009 when the Scout Association of Guyana was celebrating its centenary of scouting.

Hope explained that Scout Jamborees and all other camping activities usually instill discipline.” It is a time when the Scout leaders will assist the Scouts in becoming a better person through teaching of discipline and developing good habits of obedience, self-reliance, courage and thoughtfulness for others. These Jamborees also shape them into the adults of our future,” he added.
