Governor’s statement on reparation is ‘absolutely insulting’ - Kenneth G. Gladstone

- supports calls for H.E. Augustus J.U. Jaspert to be removed from office
Questioning the purpose of the Governor in the Virgin Islands (VI), PSI Radio host and Social Commentator Mr Kenneth G. Gladstone said it is ‘absolutely insulting’ Governor Augustus J.U. Jaspert’s comments that the UK has no intentions of paying VI reparations for acts of slavery. Photo: VINO/File/GIS
Kenneth G. Gladstone further said, 'To see the other day, out of the same slave funds he took nearly 100K to buy himself a Range Rover, it's our money… this man is out of order!' Photo: VINO/File

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Questioning the purpose of the Governor in the Virgin Islands (VI), PSI Radio host and social commentator Mr Kenneth G. Gladstone said Governor Augustus J.U. Jaspert saying the United Kingdom (UK) has no intentions of paying VI reparations is ‘absolutely insulting’.

“He has no moral foundation to be making such statements, it’s a disgrace on him… but the people of the BVI they sit quietly and allow this man to be insulting to them like that and not even a member Government has said anything about it,” a furious Gladstone told Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) in an exclusive interview.

Governor leeching off of VI

Mr Gladstone further went on to say, “To see the other day, out of the same slave funds he took nearly 100,000 to buy himself a Range Rover, it's our money… this man is out of order!”

According to the radio host, given the insulting statements, the Government of the VI should now move to immediately make plans to remove the Governor out of the Territory.

He told VINO that the Governor, his office, and the seat, are still a main symbol of colonialism plaguing the Territory, and to hear the Governor said what he said is infuriating.

Why do we need the Governor? - Gladstone

“Why do we need a governor to sit in that office if he is not going to represent the needs and the cause of the people, what is his duty?” Gladstone questioned.

“I don’t like foolishness and I’m a black man, and when a white man who represents slavery can tell me that I don’t deserve reparations, you infuriate the hell out of me, the governor has no moral foundation to tell anybody that black people in the BVI or anywhere else, do not deserve reparation,” he said.

Gladstone further illustrated that as is, the Governor is spending VI’s money, sleeping in VI’s bed and eating food paid for by VI taxpayers, a majority the descendants of slaves.

'Racist mentality must be flushed out!'

“We are paying for it…he needs to respect the fact that our sweat and blood should be honoured and he is a part of the racist mentality that is perpetrated around the world and the BVI needs to flush it out,” he said.

Gladstone is the latest of media and social commentators lambasting the Governor for his alleged racist statements against Virgin Islanders.

Many have said the Governor's position on reparations is a direct manifestation of white supremacy.

I am 100% with Kenneth G. The UK and their Governor have no genuine remorse for what has been done to our ancestors and they continue to operate with a modern slavery mentality that they call "partnership". Time to get rid of the UK and this racist man call GUS.

Pray and ask God to lead the country to the right path and for the leaders to make the right decisions. Pray for the leaders soul that they aren’t being negatively influenced by anyone. Pray that if they are corrupt to change them. This is for the Governor go down. Pray for them! Pray for the country!

We need to get ourselves up an stop praying when the lord have already told us to act and that He ‘Jesus’ has our backs, just like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. did. He got up off his knees and obeyed God’s commands to help free his people from their oppressors. He went to jail and endure trials and tribulations. That’s a true Christian!

The governor is at the lowest rank of the decision making process involved in this decision. I gust he is the one you can see so lets crucify him.
No body said it to the Queen or Prince Charles when they visited. Give the governor a break. Why not send a message to the Royalties and the bigger wigs in the British government " do not visit even or look at us until you are ready to pay reparation', since reparation is soo soo important. This reparation is just a Band wagon, a piper's dream which will never become reality. Because the accusers have no leverage against the accused.

If he can’t be a leader with true Integrity then he’s not a leader at all he’s a follower! Therefore, he is not qualified for his role. History will record his contribution to mankind, as a follower of an evil system of governance and his descendants will be ashamed of his legacy. We only live once, and we all have two choices to make in this life, and he has chosen to live in the shadows of darkness. I pray that Jesus will change his heart, and give him Godly courage to be a leader that makes Jesus proud. He believes that he chose to come to these islands, but no, he is being tested...no matter what skin color he identifies with all that matters in life is God’s Will Be Done, not evil man’s will.

After reading pihearing the voices of some of these smart and educated VIslanders ,the UK,out of a sense of responsibility and concern, should be compelled to maintain the status quo. The mere fact that a characateur of a Bishop could be joined to the hip of the elected Gov is evidence of a need for continued UK guardianship or divine intervention.
The VI, in my opinion, has a long way to go but unfortunately, they haven't a clue. Building the country with the dregs of the Caribbean to the extent that VIslanders are in the minority, their respected values, culture and sensibilities anhilated and no real effort afoot to reverse this morbid catastrophe is yet another reason clue.

Does this man not understand our system of government here? Governor is not here to represent the needs of the people. He is the Queen's representative. He represents her needs. If the people of the BVI are serious about wanting reparations then there is a legal framework from which to request these. Or you could just put a tax on all white people?

Slavery meant the death of blacks, women, children, fathers, our ancestors. After portions of it ended in the UK they paid the slave owners and give them land not the slaves the OWNERS. Now a man who is in the BVI based on slavery and white privilege telling we as a people that his government policy is no compensation for this evil.

Along with that he says a man like Sir Francis who brought slaves from North America to the Caribbean where they were killed and beaten and treated like dogs that such a person should be honored and his named remain on our sea channel, and no one see anything wrong with that????

This 'debate' is shambolic. Nobody 'deserves' anything. The reparations could be achieved in many positive ways, but that is UK government, not Gov Jaspert's policy. In terms of renaming places, I agree this should be a local decision and Jaspert did not address this issue in an acceptable manner from what I have seen reported.

The role of the Governor is to represent the Queen in protecting the people of the VI, including from their own corrupt politicians.

The claims being made by Gladstone here undermines the wider argument. For example:

The Governor is spending VI’s money. INCORRECT. He is spending UK taxpayers money.
Sleeping in VI’s bed. INCORRECT. It's UK taxpayers money.
...and eating food paid for by VI taxpayers. INCORRECT. It's UK taxpayers money.
... a majority the descendants of slaves. INCORRECT. The majority of tax in VI is paid by ex-pats - as you should well know given how vocal the current government is in complaining about the 70% ex-pat labour force...

The UK taxpayer would be delighted not to have to fork out for the VI so rather than call for unachievable and unconstitutional actions such as the Premier 'moving the Governor out of the territory', instead start working towards independence.

Is removing this governor going to put money in our pocket. He is responsible to who he answers to and must speak accordingly. On the question of reparations, here are a few questions. Who in the BVI will really qualify for money? Does just being black atomically qualifies you? Is it to each person or family? How will you decide just how much will paid to each person/family? Which whites will be help accountable to pay? I still say that they should be made to pay for all the systems and infrastructure that will enable us to become wealthy. The love of money is the root of all evil. Be very, very, careful what you ask for!

Honorable Premier please investigate Governor’s Office.

Please make transparent the hiring process.

Why are white non belongers working there taking away well paid jobs for us locals?

    Where are the job adverts?

Why they only employ their white friends & each other??

Please investigate the blatant corruption & cronyism going on there.

One is even selling her hurricane books to us!! Clearly written when she’s meant to be working!

In the scheme of virtual reality, your Premier and his office have no authority to "investigate" the Gover
nor the Gov Office. He does have authority though, to investigate and to see that we have water,to see that scooter riders give us the freedom from noise and accidents and uncertain death,to see that undocumented immigrants and criminals from other places are not here as they are in huge supply.. None of these two lil things he has done.

It is ok to speak out on social ills in the society and you should. What about blacks killing blacks in the bvi. Still waiting to hear you on that. What about expats being degraded in the bvi still waiting to hear you on that. You are or were married to a black lady. Tell me have you ever heard or saw the governor wife or any white wife for that matter in the middle of the night running through the community naked because of blows from their white husbands.

Are you going to comment on black wives running naked through the community naked shouting help. Stay within your lane my friend. You can not swim in deep waters.

We need to let the Governor and UK know we are not going to put up with their oppression any more. Look what Boris is doing to Northern Ireland breaking international treaty. They have no respect for the Rule of Law and Human Right. Look at the Miller Case also show Boris has no respect for Parliament but Lady Hale President of the Supreme Court (Privy Council) And all the other 10 judges ruled that decision was unlawful when he told the queen to prorogue parliament last September. Sagg also is part of the same unlawful ring. Collective responsibility make all of them unlawful. All the Chief Ministers and Premiers of the BVI uphold the Rule of Law, Boris needs to learn from them. As for the Commissioner he is not fit for office going to vacation during a crisis. This is unheard of. As a people we must now control our destiny. We are intelligent people, we have experts we have the resources and must of all we have almighty God. The author and finisher of all things. God please unite us as a people.

The majority of the VI residents are of African descent and whose foreparents were Caribbean Slaves. All 13 elected members of the HOA are of African descent. Governor AGU Jaspert, the crown rep and de facto head of state, parroting the UK talking point disrespecting VI residents with his insensitive and don’t give a damn attitude comment on reparation for VI slave descendants yet not one member of the HOA has publicly said a word in defense of the VI people. Someone please tell our reps that this is 2020, not 1820, and they don’t have to be afraid of massa. Show some stones meh son. It is shameful and highly disappointing that nary a rep has said a word. Are they Uncle Thoms? Are they ashame of who they are? Do they see themselves as inferior? Are they all flashing lighting, pealing thunder but no rain? As the late Norbert “Fix It” Wheatley would say, fix yourself? You are elected to represent the people but you are a poor job in this instance on this issue effectively representing the people. If you cannot stand the heat geh outta de kechen! The FCO needs to be apprised of this incident but don’t hold your breath. The Governor needs to apologize but don’t hold your breath, for he is not afraid of the less HOA. The silence is deafening and make you want to puke.

Silence means consent. The silence of the HOA members Is deafening, Not even to stay that we are in control of our destiny now and to give us hope. Why can’t we get representation. The Governor UK did our forefathers enough. How can we still be in fear. It’s time for us to rise up. But if our leaders can’t rise up and speak on our behalf. then we as a people will continue to parish under the hands of the UK and the Governor who has no respect for us. Our leaders does not have our interest at heart. If the the Governor did he would have paid us. They paid the slave masters. People of the BVI let’s stand up. It’s time for us to March for repatriation. It’s ours. COVID came for a reason. Let’s unite and make our forefathers proud. As we sing the Song.” I’m no longer a slave to fear I am a child of God. Let’s move without the HOA and vote All of them out in 2 years 5 months it’s not long. The Gov must leave now also. No apology will suffice.

@ Wise Up, welcome back from your blogging respite. Anyway, senior civil servants everywhere are hired for their public affairs chops and technical knowledge to advise elected or appointed officials in creating and implementing policies. Governor Jaspert is a senior UK civil servant assigned to represent the crown interest in the VI. Though it may have been the UK’s position not to pay reparation to Slaves descendant in the VI, along with other regional countries, the Governor in artfully and recklessly communicated the message, putting the UK perhaps in an embarrassing position. The Governor as the UK rep on ground should be skilled at diplomacy. Is it that he is in the Stephen Miller, President Trump Immigration advisor, and may not give a damn, for it is only the feelings of Black people?

@two cents, indeed, Governor Jaspert is an opportunist and as other bloggers have noted a media wh*re, ie, likes to be on radio and TV. He craves the media attention he would not have gotten back in the UK, trying to exploit being a big fish in a small pond. He is a narcissist. The Guv clearly is young and ambitious but it is shameful that he is trying to do so on the backs of Virgin Islanders. It is more shameful that he is seemingly digging up slaves and dehumanizing, brutalizing, disrespecting and terrorizing them again. The Guv has been a disaster representing the UK as Kellyanne Conway and Rudy Guiliani does for the Trump administration in the US. He is loose lip that sinks ship. If he were not White, he would have been relieve for cause already; he benefits from White privilege, an outcome from slavery. It will be in the best interest of both the VI and UK if he were to just exit the VI stage left. The VI people has lost confidence in him and if the UK is honest, it should too. Unless, it does not give a damn.

The UK benefited from Slave owners Tax up to 2015! Yes! Since the abolition of slavery, the UK public and colonies were paying the descendants of slave owners, merchants and financiers of slavery! So why shouldn’t we get reparations?! If you are saying slavery isn’t the fault of the descendants of slave owners, then they shouldn’t have been getting repaid for their financial losses due to abolition.
