At his press conference, the Governor Augustus J. U. Jaspert in lashing back at comments from Hon Andrew A. Fahie had suggested to the media that the Premier was essentially misleading the public over his concerns regarding the conditions of the Protocols for Effective Financial Management hampering the government's COVID-19 economic package.

On Thursday afternoon the Premier responded by saying, 'When persons are telling you that we can spend the reserves and there's no problem, the money is there... the money is there, we can spend... but everyone is free to do whatever they want to do, but they are not free from the consequences of their actions.' ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Governor of the Virgin Islands (VI) His Excellency Mr Augustus J. U. Jaspert has denied accusations of painting the Premier, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) in a 'negative light' during the question and answer segment of his latest press conference on Thursday, May 21, 2020.

The Governor responding to questions from a ZBVI reporter said, "to be honest, I've worked with two different Premier's here and don't comment on Premiers and I won't get drawn on that, my role isn't to get involved in politics, my role is to support whichever the government is in power."

Governor downplaying Premier's concerns

However, Governor Jaspert remains controversial for his combative political style and have long been accused of interfering in the in domestic affairs of the local government and not crediting their efforts in office.

At the same press conference, the Governor lashing back at comments from Hon Fahie, had suggested to the media that the Premier was essentially misleading the public over his concerns regarding the conditions of the Protocols for Effective Financial Management hampering the government's COVID-19 economic package.

The Premier's said the ability of his Government to seek out loan funding to stimulate economic activity was being constrained by the conditions.

However, instead of supporting the government, Governor Jaspert moved to downplay those concerns, telling the VI public instead, that he had seen no evidence to indicate that the conditions of the protocols were a hamper the government's ability to bring forward an economic package.

The Governor's comment had essentially painted a picture that the VI government was using the conditions as an excuse for not rolling out its economic stimulus plan.

'I will correct misrepresentations' - Gov Jaspert

On Thursday afternoon the Premier responded by saying, "When persons are telling you that we can spend the reserves and there's no problem, the money is there... the money is there, we can spend... but everyone is free to do whatever they want to do, but they are not free from the consequences of their actions."

Ahead of the Premier's response, the Governor said that any misrepresentations on his part will be corrected, "I will always make sure I put out a correction that needs to be done."

When questioned on whether himself and the Premier had a 'good relationship', Mr Jaspert declined to comment directly.

"I'm not going to comment/judge relations with any individual politician... I work in partnership and support for the people of the territory, that's what drives me, that's what get me out of the bed in the morning," he said.

The UK appointed Governor entered office in August 2017 and was due to leave by July 2020, however, sources told VINO that he has since extended his stay until around July of 2021.

In the dated sitcom Gomer Pyle USMC, Jim Nabors playing the character Gomer Pyle had a number of sayings, including Shazam, Surprise, Surprise, Surprise.....etc. Do we expect Guv Jaspert to admit he deliberately tries to cast Premier Fahie in a negative light. You will quicker see a green mule flying across Road Harbor. I hate apologies. People say what they want to say and then try to apologize. It is like someone after a few drinks uses the N-word and then proclaims some of my best friends are Black but you never see them with any Black friends. Lawyers would say something that he/she knows that the opposing lawyer will object to and the judge will sustain he/she says it anyway. The intent was for the jury to hear it and they heard it and rephrasing the question is just a process. One cannot unring a rung bell. The Guv should be apolitical but he is not. He just needs to represent the Crown and stay out politics; he was sent to the BVI to represent the Crown. He is an apparent media w.....e and seems to love the spotlight with an insatiable thirst and hunger to be the main man.

Here is a quote from the article:

“When questioned on whether himself and the Premier had a 'good relationship', Mr Jaspert declined to comment directly.”
"I'm not going to comment/judge relations with any individual politician... I work in partnership and support for the people of the territory, that's what drives me, that's what get me out of the bed in the morning," he said. I would think that if he had a good working relationship with the Premier, he would have succinctly said it. Instead he give some convoluted answer.

Premier Fahie has done a good job managing the pandemic but he has had some head scratchers with his unconventional and interesting leadership and management style, trying to be all things to all people at once.

If the governor was sent to the BVI because of all his education and experience in international security and strategy, why does his strategy advice to government seem so non-strategic and why aren't the concerns of the bvi government being addressed for the sake of clarity and for the sake of being able to properly mitigate any risks to the financial stability of the bvi economy (which in turn would have a profound impact on the bvi's national security). What is the real agenda here. What is his real purpose?

Thank God last election messed with the agenda. This Gov behaving like he in the opposition - talking just for votes. Please sir do your job and address the very real and serious concerns of the Premier. It’s as if your only aim these days is to attack the Premier. Why? What does the Premier know that has you so rattled? Time will tell sir!

If all the U.K. is offering this region is military and medical assistance, as it has always, and not assisting financially during a crisis ‘as they have barely ever done’ ; although it was our ancestors free labour that helped them to increase in wealth, the Governor need not be here. We can call the U.K. for their help in these matters when needed. In order to receive financial retributions we will have to demand this payment via the UN for their genocidal treatment of our people throughout the centuries.
