BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI – Governor of the Virgin Islands (VI), Mr Augustus J.U. Jaspert has once again found himself under fire, this time, over remarks he made that the United Kingdom’s position is to not pay any reparations for acts of slavery and the slave trade in the Virgin Islands.

The Governor also said the VI must learn from the lessons of slavery and reflect, while stating that he believes past relics of the Territory’s brutal colonial and slavery past should be preserved in history as a reminder of the era, during a Monday, September 7, 2020, Facebook interview with 284 Media.

Governor must apologise - Claude O. Skelton-Cline

Now, according to Social Commentator and radio host, Mr Claude O. Skelton-Cline, on the Tuesday, September 8, 2020, edition of his ‘Honestly Speaking’ talk show on ZBVI 780 AM, the Governor should apologise to the Territory over the remarks, given that slave owners were compensated after the end of chattel slavery.

“The Governor needs to apologise to Virgin Islanders for what he said…. The Governor’s foreparents, the former slave owners and the power elite thought it was wise and just to compensate themselves for loss of income, opportunity cost which were their chattel, their legal property… us, our bodies, our foreparents' bodies.”

He continued, “They went into debt to compensate slave owners for ending slavery because they claimed it was a loss of property, but he can’t, Governor Jaspert… can’t envisage such a thing as reparations or compensations for the victims of the descendents of such incomprehensible and dastardly deeds that were exacted against our people,” the 'Man of the Cloth' said.

White supremacy @ work

Echoing statements from some Virgin Islanders who have since labelled the Governor’s statement as racist and a manifestation of white supremacy in the VI, Skelton-Cline said Mr Jaspert’s statements come at a time when he still enjoys the spoils of slavery and colonial rule through his office.

“And the Governor… to this day enjoys the benefits of this institutional racism and lingering colonialism of the powerful and the elite. Governor Jaspert is here in these Virgin Islands because of it, he is the Governor because of it, he didn’t earn it… his ancestors stole it from our fore-parents and we are here having to fight for what should have been rightfully ours at birth.”

Meanwhile, Skelton-Cline further lambasted the Governor for his statement that relics of the VI’s colonial past be preserved, such as places named after slave trader Sir Francis Drake.

Demonstrable level of ignorance - Skelton-Cline

Skelton-Cline said the belief is the same as celerating slave owners, “it is synonymous to saying he want the lies to perpetuate because he rather lift up the murderers and the rapist and the misogynist and the thieves as heroes, rather than the innocent and the victims of this level of enslavement.

He said the Governor’s statements are further synonymous to those in the scriptures where sick minds called for Barabbas to be saved and for Jesus to be killed.

“It’s a demonstrable level of ignorance and moral and ethical ineptitude for the Governor to look the people of the Virgin Islands in their face and utter such putrid remarks and nonsense,” Skelton-Cline said.

Don’t think you guys will not be punished for your evil, many of your ancestors are most likely suffer in hell for their evils against humanity.

It is of course the common belief that slaves were routinely mistreated and beaten for no reason, and led short brutal lives. And though it undoubtedly happened, only an idiot treated them like that.. An African slave was an extremely valuable and expensive item. A young male in good condition cost the modern equivalent of $150,000 in 1850 in the USA. We can deduce from that that earlier in BVI slaves were also very very valuable. Only a fool treats such a valuable person badly. Women and children were also usually well treated because Women were also valuable workers and each baby born was potentially a lot of money. These were valuable people. Do not underestimate your ancestors.

Cline needs to read some history and get to know what the 1619 movement is in the USA. 1619 being the date the first African slaves landed in the USA. Sir Francis Drake died in 1596 before there were any African slaves in the Caribbean or elsewhere so he certainly was not a slave trader.

The 1619 movement in the USA claims that the reason for the American Revolution was because Britain was trying to stop them having slaves. There were never any slaves allowed in the UK itself.

So go sit down and read some books Cline.

The vast majority of white European people played no part at all in slavery. There was no slavery in Europe after the Romans left. Only the very very few Europeans who ventured to Africa, the Caribbean and the USA in the 17th and 18th centuries played a part.

It is racist in the extreme to believe that all white people were responsible for slavery . It is also true that the vast majority of black slaves were rounded up and sold to the slave traders by their fellow blacks.

As for the British , the British in Britain were the ones who forced the abolition of slavery on the Europeans in the Caribbean and used their naval power to do so.

Britain outlawed the transportation of slaves in 1796. It was not until 70 years later that the USA abolished slavery.

So if you participated in the kidnapping of an individual, realized during that act that it was imoral and wrong (because others fought to show you this), then decided to stop doing the act, that you should be let off. My dear no. In law, you are still culpable. "White people" as you state it, there is no such thing, are not the ones being questioned here. Britain was involved and benefited from the slave trade. The colonization and destruction caused by Britain is world wide. They are responsible for so much it is heartbreaking. Still today, they are benefiting.
          Please educate yourself.

There is no reason for the Governor to apologize. Blacks fail to realize that they are also racists. Blacks call each other the N word, Black, Ugly, nappy headed, light skinned blacks think they are better than the dark skinned blacks. So tell me if that is not racist. It is ok for a black to say racist things to each other and and it is fine. As soon as White person say something, they are racist towards the black race. CALLING A WHITE PERSON HONKY TO THEIR FACES WHICH I HEAR QUITE A LOT FROM BLACK PEOPLE ON THE ISLAND IS RACIST.

Don't want to rain on CSC's parade but if you are descended from slaves then these islands are not yours by birth and your lands are on the other side of the Atlantic. Natives were here long before the slave ships arrived and so unless you descend from these native peoples you have no more rights to the islands than the white people that bought the slaves over.

Everyone in this territory is an expat.....out forefathers ALL came from foreign countries.....so where is the magical line in the sand that says once you have crossed this line you are indigenous to the territory.

who compensates the many expats who have been wronged by the gross human and civil rights violations the BVI have imposed on them over the years

i am a white person. dont for one minute believe that i hold the same views as my evil forefathers who enslaved black people. just because of the colour of my skin Sir. you are decisive (CSC) you are manifesting this racism here in these Islands and as a man of the cloth you should me ashamed of yourself.

There are no natives. Guess who used them and killed them by way of slave labor before the introduction of Africans.

When we speak of indigenous VI landers we mean people who's ancestors have a shared history in their trip across the middle passage.

When you all say there are no real natives, we are all foreign you forget that the natives were done so wrong that there are no left to apologize to. Who did that?

How much responsibility does a slave owner, and descendants there of have for human beings which you displaced as part of your business plan, the wealth from which families abroad are still living lavish upon.

Who cares what CCC thinks? The Governor answered the question with honesty and integrity, yet he is vilified. Perhaps you would prefer that he had lied about the UK Government's position on this matter? If you do not want a Governor here from the UK, then you must seek independence. Look to other places that have been granted their independence already and ask yourselves if this is what you want, or not. Meanwhile, the Governor is appointed by the Queen and she decides if he stays or goes.

I struggle to see what is specifically racist about what the Governor said. He was clearly asked a question about the UK government's position on these things and responded in kind. You don't shoot the messenger but hey at least it gives CSC and plenty of idiots on here something to get all angry about. While you all get raging about the Governor, we are still being robbed blind by local corruption but what does that matter as long as its locals that are screwing us in the behind.

Changing the names of things to better represent the local populace would a good gesture but that is all it would be. The only one to benefit will be whichever local gets the contract to change the signs and rinse the taxpayers for the cost. It will not change the genuine ills that cause inequality and friction in our community that people like CSC are only too happy to fan the flames of.

@ "Conial" Despite the fact that we are a Dependent Territory and we are not contending for independence but for more self-determination, I see this as both persons (Gov. Jaspert and Claude S. Cline) utilizing their democratic right to exercise freedom of speech.

Mr Skelton Cline you need to go and get your facts straight before publishing Have you read your history books so you can compare and contrast ideas. you need to really read and read the important arwas and find out what really went on when it comes to slavery iam not saying that slavery was agood thing but through the process of slavery many of us became great land owners so you need to go and do some serious research because you might be held accountable when the questions start dropping in your lap.. There is a priod of slavery called the apprenticship period what do you know about that Boy go do some serious R and R berore you come to your own. conclusions and of which some does not have no substancial value

Will someone kindly specify..What and where in this interview did the Governour demonstrate that he is a racist?
Right now I am feeling embarrassment reading these comments which are for the most part,, bizarre ,misguided and with contrived allegations. Is this where we have sunken or is it simple mindedness and naivete.

Sir Francis Drake who has killed black babies in the middle passage and on their way to the Caribbean, who has rape and kill blacks and was an active slave owner, for a sitting governor of the BVI to say he sees nothing wrong with that name on our water ways and for some of you to say I find nothing for him to apology for is mind boggling.

And to agree with him with a policy that after 200 years of slavery and rape, of a people yes only blacks that they do not deserves reparation and that is the British position again is some crazy stuff. How can any one that is progressive and enlightened say they see nothing racist about that!

The Governor’s office and he being here speaks to racism, colonialism and white power over us, that alone should make people of faith and justice outraged. It hurts me to read some of you see nothing wrong with that!!

Why pick a fight with the Governor. Makes absolutely no sense. Please stop. Everyone who culturally grew up in the British Virgin Islands know how the system here works. We are not the United States, thank God. We do not need any stress and strife at this time. With what is going on worldwide, affecting our part of the world, we have enough to deal with. We don't need this. Once again, Stop.

Mr Governor, don’t apologize, you have nothing to apologize for. Blacks tend to hide behind this ooooh, I’m BLACK AND THE WHITE MAN IS KEEPING ME DOWN. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR KEEPING YOUR OWN SELVES DOWN. A BLACK MAN COMES ACROSS SAY, $10,000 DOLLARS, WHAT HE DOES, GO ON A WILD SPENDING SPREE, A WHITE MAN WILL SAVE THE MONEY OR OPEN A TRUST FUND FOR THEIR CHILDREN.

The Governor, past and present has been insulted more than anyone by this Political Party with no expressed apology or regret. Feelings of an inferiority complex
with lack of substance might be the contributing factors. Their shenanigans is comic relief like any other poppy show and pistarcle.

I can remember the Governor being all over these islands after Irma, he had only just arrived and was welcomed with a category 5. He took control for the benefit of the BVI and its people during a time when the Government was non existent, he has also been key in how we have been dealing with Covid. You might consider his position ceremonial but his role has been crucial the past 3 years.

    Racist.....I think not
