Giant Valley to seek revenge against St Moose next month
It was on April 29, 2016 at Clinton E. Phipps Racetrack in St Thomas, US Virgin Islands that Giant Valley stunned the crowd after the pre-race hype for the Governor’s Cup surrounded My Pal Shawn of Tortola and St Moose of St Croix.
However, they had to yield to the powerful front running of Giant Valley, who defeated St Moose by a length and My Pal Shawn finishing fourth after an issue with the gate saw the horse getting off to a late start. Call Daddy was third.
The question was whether the Tortola horse, owned by Lesmore Smith of Top Priority Racing Stables, could complete a remarkable double by winning the Premier’s Cup on home turf.
However, St Moose of St Croix outclassed the field to defend the Premier's Cup with Integrity of St Thomas taking second, followed by My Pal Shawn of Tortola.
Giant Valley was last.
Not the last of Giant Valley
It will not be the last of Giant Valley; however, as according to Smith, the horse will be taken to St Croix for the Labour Day races there next month. It will mean another possible showdown with St Moose.
“The horse didn’t settle down on the track,” Mr Smith said of Giant Valley’s showing at the Premier’s Cup race.
“I am going St Croix for Labour Day so that is the plan,” Mr Smith added.
Further asked what he felt went wrong in the race, Mr Smith said: “I don’t complain about jockey do this and jockey do that, I believe horse race is what it is. My horse didn’t run his race and I have to figure it out next time.”
Mr Smith is known to come back strong with his horses, especially when he is counted out. A perfect example is his exploits with Good Prospecting, who was twice Governor’s Cup champion.
