ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Verbal abuses and near physical altercations are part of the experience while waiting for service at Immigration Department in Road Town, on the main island of Tortola.

According to reports reaching this newsroom, tensions are high due to the long hours that visitors to the department have to wait for service, sometimes up to four hours, as the government office seems to be struggling with the backlog of applicants and the many persons that show up on a day to day basis.

As is the case with long lines and overcrowding, there are also reports of persons trying to get service ahead of others who show up at the department before them. This has been one of the main reasons why there continues to be “fights” among members of the public.

Many show up at the department at around 7:00 A.M., two hours before the department opens, in the hope of beating the long lines, but still end up having to wait for hours.

“They share out a certain amount of numbers and that’s it for the day, others have to come back another day. The problem with that though is they share out the numbers at random and persons who came early sometimes end up getting service long after persons who came after them. It’s not fair,” a member of the public complained to our news site, adding that they showed up at the department since 8:30 A.M. and only got through after 12:00 P.M.

There was one incident yesterday, November 21, 2017 where a man pointed out to a woman that she was unfairly trying to get ahead of others and was met with profanities. It is reported that the woman even “pushed” the man.

Added to the long wait, many persons reported to this news site that they stood outside of the Immigration building for close to three hours, only to be told they had to get a new letter from their employer showing they were still employed following the passage of hurricanes Irma and Maria two months ago. Others were told they needed other documents.

“They need to state certain things before so people don’t waste their time standing for hours. I already took time off from work and now I have to come back tomorrow to stand in another line again. This is madness. They need to have a more efficient system in place,” a visitor to the Immigration Department on November 21, 2017 told this news site.

Others said there needed to be consideration for senior citizens, who also are made to endure the long wait for service.

It has been reported; however, that consideration is made for persons from the sister islands.

Bear with us – Acting Chief Immigration Officer

Meanwhile, Acting Chief Immigration Officer, Geraldine Ritter-Freeman said there are many challenges facing the department but has urged the public to bear with it as it seeks to return to normal service in a timely manner.

“All things considered, the Immigration Department continues to face various challenges that can have an adverse impact on service delivery.  These internal challenges are being discussed with hopes of getting the Department back on line and functioning to its optimum in a timely manner.

“However, in the interim the opening hours are 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. This allows us to process as many persons as we can manually and then to take care of the back end processes in the afternoon.  We know that the hours aren't ideal but we are doing the best that we can under the circumstances.  To this end, I crave the public's indulgence as we seek to deliver professional services to the public.”

Long lines have also been witnessed at the Moneygram location at Geneva Place in Road Town since, according to reports, not all of the money transfer services on the island are up and running.

There was one incident on Monday, November 20, 2017 where a Dominican woman was trying to unfairly get ahead of a Filipino woman and because the Filipino woman would have none of it she was met with profanities and racial abuse.

@just asking... It is not Doc's job to get anyone back on their feet. Each and everyone of us is responsible for getting ourselves back on our own two feet. You people have to stop thinking that the Government is there to always assist and aid.

Easy solution. Have an officer their early to give out numbers, then the latecomers will be dealt with late. I know all too well of getting somewhere early and latecomers pushing up first.

There is no excuse for these people to be acting uncivilized. Profanity and fighting at the doors of Immigration. They lucky they not on the next flight out. We tolerate too much foolishness in this place.

If they would listen to radio ZBVI they would know that they needed that letter before showing up at the department. The information was given for weeks.

You have to come up with something better than your answer about no one has radios. This is talking Tortola where almost everyone have constant diearia of the mouth. If a goat gives birth to kids in East End, within seconds the news is all over the Island. Understand what I am saying. No one has radios? PLZ.

Some people have no respect for themselves nor others. I was in a supermarket line waiting to cash out and a woman from Dominica pushed herself in front of me and stated that she doesn't care who is next cause she is going....I just let the fat hog go ahead of me rather than get into any altercation.

@Hogwash, only here people can do S#"t like that and get away with it. The East Coast where I am from, she would have taken a swift ride across the check out counter. But, I feel you, you did the right thing by not letting the ignorant fool ruin your day.

At Immigration it would help if they would stop that annoying video that they show on repeat all the time. Waiting there for hours you get to see it dozens of times and it gets people wound up as the service being described in the video is not the reality!! Can't you just broadcast CNN so at least there is some variety?

You try to educate the people it is a problem, in the same breath they say you not giving them info. You really can't please people. Read a book if you don't want to look at the video, it is there for everyone to view as they come and go. What is wrong with these people?

What's so funny about the video is that keeps talking about the need to guard against/control people coming into the BVI, at a time when everything is smashed to bits, nothing works properly, there is no obvious plan, and people (both Belongers and expats) are leaving like puss out of a boil. The irony is not lost on people who have spent 3 or 4 hours waiting (a lot in the sun), when they have work to do (often involving re-building work), when a text or WhatsApp appointment system should not be beyond the wit of Man to devise.

  • Why Not (22/11/2017, 12:13) Like (8) Dislike (2) Reply
Why not do it by the Alphabetical system. Last names beginning with A show up on Monday, Last names beginning with B show up on Tuesday etc... That will eliminate the long lines and long wait.

As I can recall, when some of these same people who are complaining go to the US Embassy in Barbados to get their visa to travel to the US they get themselves out of bed at 4:00am to reach the embassy before six and stand in long lines without a murmur.
Just wait until you are served or try another immigration line.
    • Yessss (22/11/2017, 18:20) Like (7) Dislike (4) Reply
@Reeled, truth, nothing but the truth. Because the want to get to the good Ole USA. Exactly, LOL. If they have to wait for 20 hours on line at the Embassy they would stand on line and you will not get a grunt out of them. LOL. Don't get mad at the Immigration Dept. They are doing the best they can.

Appointment at the US embassy in Barbados are made weeks in advance and they is a cut out number, renewal are every 5 and 10 years. Why would u even compare that to yearly or monthly visit to the BVI immigration and labour system?

I don't understand the fuss, people have to learn what patience means. You have to wait in line for everything. Tip: take a book with you and read while you are waiting on line.

Think the department would work more efficiently if they stopped using the ticket system. Persons should call and make an appointment for whatever service they need. If you miss your alloted day and time. Tough. Reschedule. That way they could control how many persons are in their offices any given day a d time. No walk ins.
