ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Former Press Secretary and current radio programme producer Mr Devon U. Osborne alleged that he was evicted from the media booth during the sitting of the House of Assembly (HoA) today June 13, 2014.

Relating the circumstances surrounding his eviction from the media booth, Mr Osborne said that initially he was seated in the public space in the HoA and was called to sit in the media booth by another who was aware of his working with ZROD.

“Practically the Sergeant at Arms grasped my attention from in the media booth asking me if I am a part of the media and I told him yes,” related Mr Osborne. He said that he informed the officer he was hired by ZROD FM for a new show that they would be producing very soon.

“One of the employees of the House of Assembly asked me which media I was with and I told him that I am with ZROD FM, I had my recorder, so he told me to come to the back where the press is at, so gladly I went to the back,” he said.

He said that it was after a recess of the Honourable House he was approached by the Sergeant at Arms and told that the radio station with which he was affiliated was not registered. “...and they are looking into members of the media who should be registered and who should be a part of the press room or the House of Assembly.” Osborne said that he viewed the statement as another way to censor the media.

“I feel as a member of the media we continue to be censored for whatever reason!”

Mr Osborne said that what surprised him most of all was when he was approach by the Sergeant at Arms with a police officer.

He said however as he was not allowed to sit in the press room he took a position in the public space in the HoA. “…but at the same time if I am not allowed to be in the press area, if ZROD is not registered and I am not allowed to be in the press room well then I’ll sit in the area of the public…do you have anything against that?” related Mr Osborne.

Mr Osborne said that he could not confirm if ZROD was registered. “I wouldn’t say that I was literally thrown out but that I was not granted access as a member of the media,” he said.

“I guess it’s just a matter of communication and that’s what we do communicate… I guess there was a lack of that and I guess that matter would be fixed eventually,” he stated.

Efforts by this news site to reach the Sergeant at Arms were futile up to post time.

There is little to be gained and far too much to be lost by fighting with the locals.
