DUFFS BOTTOM, Tortola, VI - Businesses and residents in the Virgin Islands (VI) have been told to finalise their hurricane plans, should Disturbance 1, known also as Invest 92L, develop into a tropical storm, with the possibilities of it becoming a Category 1 Hurricane as it travels across the Caribbean.

With current weather data showing the disturbance on a direct path over the Virgin Islands, Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) urged persons in the Territory to be ready should it upgrade.

Disturbance 1 could impact VI by end of the week - Hon Fahie

"Reports are that the system continues to develop and may be upgraded to a Tropical Depression or Tropical Storm today, Monday, or tomorrow [July 28, 2020]. If it is upgraded to a tropical storm, Isaias will be the ninth tropical storm for the season."

Hon Fahie was at the time speaking at today's July 27, 2020, 13th Sitting of the Second session of the Fourth House of Assembly at the Save the Seed Energy Centre.

He said, "Forecasters have indicated that the disturbance may begin affecting the Lesser Antilles from late Wednesday into Thursday and the British Virgin Islands late Thursday into Friday."

Tropical Cyclone Warning in effect - DDM

Meanwhile, according to the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) via information released at 2:00 pm today, the disturbance remains under a 'tropical cyclone warning' for the Leeward and the Virgin Islands.

Should the disturbance be upgraded to a storm it will be called Isaias, which would make it the 6th named storm for the 2020 hurricane season, the Premier said.

The DDM through the Antigua and Barbuda meteorological services said given that it is difficult to determine the possible impacts from the disturbance in question, it is still forecasted to be in the vicinity of the territory within the next two days.

"Therefore, it poses a moderate threat with the potential to cause significant impacts from storm-force winds, elevated storm surge, extreme seas, moderate flooding and possibly a few tornadoes, resulting in life-threatening conditions, disruptions to daily life and some damage to infrastructure," DDM said.
