Festival Opening changed to accommodate Minister’s schedule?

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - An announcement made by the Virgin Islands Festival and Fairs Committee, that the official opening of the festival will not be held as traditional on the night after the Gospel Concert due to undisclosed issues, put some to wonder about the reason for this change.

This announcement was made during a press conference on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 where the media was updated on the plans for the festival this year.

The official opening is accustomed to be on the night after the gospel concert, but instead the launch will be held on July 28, 2012, on the same night as the Calypso show.

With some hints and in contact with Marvin Blyden, Chairman of the Festival and Fairs Committee, he told this news site that the Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron Walwyn will not be on the island on July 26, but will be on July 28.

At the press conference that was held with the committee, Acting Director of Culture Brenda Lettsome-Tye, stated that the opening of the festival had to be moved, and that July 28, was the closest and only available date to accommodate the opening.

Efforts were made to contact Mrs. Lettsome-Tye, but were unsuccessful.

The Emancipation Festival is set to launch on July 28, 2012, followed by the festival’s annual Calypso Show later that same night.

Speak for yourself. The other 2 news sites report impartial news. This site always seems to be reporting with a slant to poke others. It is so in-your-face when it's done, it's almost comical. What I do like about VINO is they write more public interest stories than others, but I find articles such as this somewhat bothersome. It's akin to a workmate complaining about someone, and you could really care less about their personal squabbles. It doesn't affect you. And neither does the fact that the opening ceremony was delayed. Who cares? The festival events are still occurring. People who want to attend the Gospel night will still go. The minister should be the one to officially open Festival, if he has a conflicting schedule that delays the ceremony for a couple of days, no big deal! It makes more sense to have the opening remarks made on a weekend when more people might be in attendance anyhow. I'm sure no one is harmed or has reason to be offended by the change in dates for the opening words. If it does bother some then they really need to do some inner soul searching. There are far more important things to worry about.

so what happens to the parties that were scheduled to play on the Friday night, also what about the performances for the Thursday night....these people are still to be paid with most of it being or Tax dollars so the show can go on without this Minister present. If he wishes to give remarks on his return we welcome it. But what can you say he is the Minister in Charge....only in the BVI.

Anybody give a s...t when the village officially opens? People don't even attend that nonsense. Village will open on Thursday with the Gospel Fest and have entertainment on Friday. So the official opening for we who does lime will be Friday with Showtime and others. Saturday before the Calypso show they will have an official 'opening' which is usually boring and a bunch of Ministers talking.
