PASEA, Tortola, VI – RiteWay Food Market turned the bullet on a local bakery after being accused of hiking the price of its bread by one dollar, causing the bakery to take a decision to pull its product from the supermarket.

It was yesterday, October 19, 2016 that it was published in a section of the media that Family Food Bakery was unhappy that the local supermarket to which it supplies locally produced bread had jacked up its shelf price by a dollar without consulting the bakery.

Family Food Bakery has been operated by Julia and Tyler Dawson for approximately four years now. Mrs Dawson reportedly said, “RiteWay’s latest strong-arm antic of unilaterally increasing the price of our bread loaves from $6 to $7 last Friday without any agreement or consultation with us is frankly unacceptable and not how we do business.”

The company stated that it had since ceased supplying RiteWay because of this as it felt its customers were being exploited.

RiteWay blames Family Food Bakery

However, this public statement did not go down well with RiteWay who fired back, making it public that in fact it was Family Food Bakery that had hiked its price, resulting in the new shelf price.

In a statement posted on the BVI Community board, RiteWay said, “In response to the allegations made by Family Food Bakery, that RTW increased the prices from $6 to $7 on bread loaves purchased from their business we wish to state that the price increase was initiated by the Family Food Bakery on September 27th, 2016 after it was communicated to us that their selling price per loaf was increased by 33%.”

It was further explained, “Despite the claims that RTW raised our prices without any agreement or consultation with the Family Food Bakery, we can confidently say that efforts were made to communicate with the owners of the establishment on October 9, 2016 to discuss the issue of pricing, but those efforts proved futile as no response was received.”

RTW said that after reviewing the product’s pricing, they made the decision to absorb some of the cost by increasing the retail price of the Bread by 25%, which is below the price imposed on us by the vendor.

“In line with our ethical responsibilities to our vendors, the details surrounding our relationship with this vendor will not be disclosed. However, we wish to state that it is never nor has it ever been our intention to “strong arm” any business with whom we partner to supply our customers’ needs,” said RTW’s release.

That bread hard like rock, thank goodness RTW ain't selling that again, who pays $7. For bread? That bakery should be ashamed trying to compete with RTW. If you have such high demand for your product, you don't need to sell you bread and be that vendor to try arguing with a well establish supermarket. And never had an issue before with other Vendors. Sell your breads in the bakery where people can flood your store if they really like that rock.

Now this sounds we have 1st April!
Besides of International Perfums and exclusive Designer Fashion, nowhere in the world can a vendor regulate or even suggest for how much the products are sold for. La Baguette sells excellent bread and are here since donkey years. RTW is supporting some newcomers from SA and are treated like this??

In my opinion. I do not think Super markets should be doing in house cooking, baking and selling.. It's such n unfair advantage to Restaurants and Bakeries..Then again they offer a fast in and out service that restaurants don't offer.

Serious. We don't need super markets to be doing in house cooking and Baking and selling. It's such an unfair competition for our local Bakeries and Restaurants...

The moral of the story is not who can bake bread or not....these supermarket have NO PRICE CONTROL, and is taking advantage of the consumers. The prices of item increases dramatically without warning.I purchase powdered coconut milk from RITE WAY for $.50 a pack Monday, by Friday I returned to purchase some more to discover the price had been jacked up from $.50 to $1.05.......are you kidding me!!!!!!!!!!Who is looking out for US?????????????
