ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Family and friends of Kawa G. Williams, a scooter accident victim, are banding together to help raise urgent funds to help the young man walk again.

A relative speaking to Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) told this news website, “He was involved in a scooter accident on the afternoon of May 18, 2020 [and] he's been in ICU at the hospital with traumatic injuries ever since.”

The motor scooter accident took place on Fort Hill.

Fractured skull & damaged ligaments

According to the relative, the young man suffered a fractured skull and the ligaments in his right knee are badly damaged and needs immediate surgery which cannot be done in the VI.

As a result of the skull fracture also, it is impairing Kawa’s movement on the right side of his body.

“He's in the process of being flown to Columbia for further surgeries to fix the injuries that he sustained. I will keep you posted of his progress once we get to Columbia but for right now we need everyone to share [and] donate in whatever way you can,” the relative said.

Williams is scheduled to be airlifted to the South American country later today, May 26, 2020, and the family and friends, as well as his past teachers from the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS), have since organised a GoFundMe account to raise some of the funds.

NHI covering 80% of expenses

“NHI will cover 80% of his surgery expenses leaving 20% for his mom to pay. It is our desire to help her cover this amount as well as other expenses she’ll encounter while being in Columbia with him. We’re asking for the help of our community near and far. Anything you can offer will be greatly appreciated. Thanking you in advance. God bless,” the GoFundMe page noted.

The family has so far thanked the doctors and nurses at the Dr D. Orlando Smith Hospital for their work in keeping Williams alive ahead of the airlift to Columbia.

The GoFundMe page can be found here and the family has since raised $1470 of the $12,000 target. Persons looking to reach out to provide help and support can call 284-545-8560 or ESHS teacher Roxanne McNeil at 284-443-7619.

I totally agree with you. Every single day we see them riding recklessly and it's even worse on the weekends. There was a set of them blocking the road down Cane Garden Bay

@ common sense and To common sense, I am in total agreement with both of you. We often bash the young when they crashed on these scooters but what is even more disgusting is when you see grown people doing the very same things that the young ones are doing, you have to really ask yourself who is setting the example. Just yesterday afternoon I witnessed a grown man with children racing down the highway in a bike with a youth man both of them with no helmet on. To my amazement when I got to the Round-a-bout, there is another grown man with children and possibly grand children on a scooter with no helmet. Then we often blame the youths. Some of these same parents, when you talk about their children on these scooters they get vex with you and tell you to mind your own business but when shit happened they the same ones coming to asked for assistance. I lay the blame on the parents for all these young people up and down on these scooters, forming the ass every day.

Young men, yall gotta listen. This is the consequence of not listening. Where does your drive for speed do for you. I believe this also happened while we were suppose to be under curfew. Now you got your family up and down begging to keep you alive and get you back in shape. Over nonsense. Hope the riding parnna dem would contribute as well. Just sorry for his family. Life already a bitch with people not working or less hours, now got to deal with this kind of crap. Was it worth it? Other riders, take heed. Relax ayo self. To be up and down stunting and ripping through traffic isn't worth it.

Not trying to put anyone down at a time like this but some of his injuries could've been avoided. I don't understand why some bikers prefer to ride without a helmet. I'd think that there is already enough examples of the outcome riding without safety. Open up your eyes young people. Like c'mon.

Sorry that a mother is so stressed out by this. Very sad. The riders of scooters the (wild headed) youngsters seriously needs to take heed. Father’s and Mother’s of child that ride scooters I ask how much more? How many more? It’s not fair for careless people to be living careless and get hurt they need assistance. People need help and we should do our best; but foolishness involved? Come on man!! Riders please chill out. Hon. Rymer I have to agree with the community and rethink bigger bikes. Don’t worry about Election you’re secure for a long time.

So no helmet and we need to help pay his hospital expenses and mama at his side? NHI is tax payer money, doubt this bike rider ever paid in to NHI. Before 8 a this morning a boy on a motor bike, no helmet, squeezed between me and another car and did that trick 5 times and then stopped at the Tobacco Wharf light and when it turned green, he did a wheelie for us all to admire and it was one long wheelie. Before 8am. Why does the BVI have such a huge civil service and small and ineffective and never there when you need them police force? These young boys want to disable themselves, no problem, but I have no interest in helping pay for their recovery. Stop motor bikes in the BVI, for locals, because they abuse the situation. Other motorbike riders, yes I said it, no belonged motor bike users so not ride with out helmets, do wheelies in front of traffic that just wants to get to work. Make motor bike use for BVIslanders illegal, or they are going to suck out NHI DRY. That means no money left for the rest of us BVIslanders.

Augustus, wake the heck up. Governors have power. Control your police force get action.

Spare the rod and spoil your child.if these patentd teach their children right from wrong today we would never end up in some of these situations.these you riders are reckless,a few years ago the hon ronnie Skelton warned these parents about how costly it is when these children fall off these scooters, but it kept falling on deaf ears.at the end of the day when it hit the fans these children going to put their parents in expensises because the do not here.

The taxpayers will cover 80% of the debt via NHI. We all pay not just the parents. Our ministers need to take note of how costly it is to pay for these accidents. Ban the bikes! Ban the noise! At the very release, ban riders under 25. Ban the noisy mufflers in either case.

I will send money to you to help but you must understand that you can't keep bringing this badness upon your mother. Ride with necessary precautions and cover up. Don't rideike someone with no family to care for him. Gees

Parents buying scooters and g9ving their young kids. You didn't know he was gonna go show off on the road. You wanted him to die. Can't seek donation now. Should have probably insured him. Or did you believe he was going to be better than his friends doing wheelies. Smh. If you had money to buy bike for him you don't need to be asking donations.

    1) the kid was unconscious at the road side and had nothing todo with the scooter being moved. If they knew where it was it would be sold to pay his bill.
    2) The kid was repeatedly told to wear a helmet. It’s not just him that doesn’t and a massive part of why they don’t is peer pressure. He also saved and bought his own bike.
    3) it didn’t happen after curfew so stop stirring unsubstantiated shit.
    4) Any of you going to come with better solutions for the young kids to a) get around the islands and b) what else to do. Sports are currently banned. Apparently all of you were complete saints when you were kids and never did anything wrong.

You want scooters to get banned then let’s get a proper bus service around the islands 24/7.

Your attitude in defense of the indefensible, strongly suggests some of the reasons contributing to his current condition and predicament. An apology and humility shows class, intelligence and good parenting. His stay as a Black in Columbia and also seeking urgent medical care just might be the perfect solution for him and his outlook on life and choices.

This is exactly what happens when kids dont listen.
    1. Riding without helmet and break the law now needs the public assistance to fix a fractured skull. That makes sense?
    2. Motorcycle removed from the scene before the police arrived. The only assumption is that the bike is illegal and have not proper paperwork or insurance. If the bike was insured the parents wouldn't be begging assistance now.

I hope that this accident serves as a lesson to other bike riders. Do the ride thing all the time. Wear your helmets and ensure that you all get and have proper paperworks for your motorcycle.

Having said that I hope the BVI community will still assist financially to this ypung man. Wish for him a speedy recovery and this may be his turning point in which this accident will be the one that saves many more lives.
