Everyone’s a winner as Blue & Gold share championship!
The Gold’s were just ahead in the overall points total and with a win they would have successfully defended their 2012 championship win. Coming round the final bend and at the last baton changeover they even held a slight advantage and Deandre James set off down the home straight with victory in sight, but Shemoey Manning had different ideas and with an electric burst of speed, overtook his rival, dipping across the line just inches ahead.
The amazing victory for Blue House meant they had tied the Championship with Gold House on 128 points each.
“It was an excellent day," commented EHRLC Principal, Mrs. Vansittart Huggins. “I’m very happy for the outcome because we have already schooled the students that they are all winners, nobody is a loser, so guess what, it was a tie and now they they are all winners."
Mrs. Huggins was also thankful for the attendance of many of the schools alumni. “Most of them attend BVI Services and they added to a fantastic atmosphere and day of sports.”
A full contingent of the Alumni and those attending EHRLC took part in a mixture of races including wheelchair, lime and spoon, late for school, bean bag race, ball throw, sprints and then the relays.
Meet organizer Mrs Noel said “it was challenging, but this year was so special with the involvement of past students.” She further commented, “the events went well, everyone did their part and there was plenty of exciting races between the two houses and also BVI Services.”
Other stirring performances during the day included Manning Frank giving Blue house early ascendancy in the bucket races before Quinton Mills recorded the first win of the day for gold house in the third race.
In the sprints, the track was lit up not only by the smiles from the athletes, but also the outstanding speed of Alphonoso Davis.
Tanya Bobb also put in some inspirational performances and won the sprint race ahead of Jason Leonard and Delta Smith.
As the day drew to a close Tahee Lloyd gave Gold House the edge in the points standing with his bean bag race victory, but the performance of Francesca Remy, Joseph and Antonio Castello meant that Blue House were still within reach.
Gold house thought they had it in the bag, but Manning had different ideas and the final race will long remain in the memory of those in attendance.
“I was happy to have the education officers’ present and past teachers and parents. We had good support but next year we will come bigger and better,” concluded Huggins.
